TRUCKS RECALLS * USA: NHTSA fines

* DC - NHTSA fines two heavy-duty truck firms $44M

-- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Thursday it is fining two heavy-duty truck manufacturers $44 million — including Michigan-based Spartan Motors Inc. — for failing to recall vehicles in a timely fashion... Charlotte-based Spartan and Indiana-based Forest River Inc. acknowledged they failed to launch timely safety defect recalls as required by federal law and to report critical data such as technical service bulletins and Early Warning Report data. Most of the fines will be suspended if the automakers comply with the settlements... The investigations resulted in part from NHTSA’s efforts to tighten enforcement of safety reporting requirements. Since the start of 2014, NHTSA has imposed significant civil penalties against Honda and Ferrari for failure to meet Early Warning Report requirements to provide information on deaths, injuries, warranty claims. It has imposed civil penalties against manufacturers including Hyundai Motor Co., General Motors Co. and Graco for untimely recalls...
