* Sweden - Volvo Trucks releases five new features for rough terrain


-- Volvo Trucks continues to improve productivity within construction by releasing another five new features, including Volvo Dynamic Steering for dual front axles and increased front axle loads. This further highlights Volvo Trucks’ special attention to the construction segment. 
 1. Volvo Dynamic Steering for dual front axles 
 2. Increased front axle loads, dual front axles 
 3. Five-axle trucks, 10x4 and 10x6 
 4. Rear air suspension in combination with driven front axle (Volvo FMX) 
 5. Electronic Brake System for drum brakes... 
-- In addition to the Volvo FMX, Volvo FH and Volvo FH 16, the Volvo Trucks construction vehicle range also encompasses the Volvo FL with four-wheel drive and gross weight of up to 18 tonnes, and the Volvo FE with maximum gross weight of 26 tonnes...

* Sweden - 80% of unscheduled downtime can be avoided with preventative maintenance


-- A survey conducted by Volvo Trucks reveals that incidents of unplanned downtime can be cut by 80 per cent. In the long term, Volvo’s aim is that unscheduled downtime should become a thing of the past, thanks to the continued growth of online connectivity in trucks, a development that creates entirely new scope for working with preventive maintenance... Unplanned downtime is perhaps one of the most problematic issues that can affect a haulage operator. Apart from the inconvenience for the driver, it creates extra costs for repairs, lost revenue and, in worst-case scenarios, damage to a customer's reputation... In order to increase our knowledge on how to help haulage companies boost their uptime, Volvo Trucks recently conducted a comprehensive survey based on real-life user data from 3,500 Volvo trucks gathered over a five-year period. Using this data, the company conducted advanced simulations and generated a variety of possible service situations to analyse how, why and when trucks suffer from unexpected downtime. The aim was to find out how this can be avoided... "The study clearly showed that by being able to monitor the truck's usage and the current status of the vehicle's various key components, it is possible to plan maintenance better. We think we can reduce the amount of unplanned downtime by around 80 per cent if the truck is serviced in time and in response to actual needs," explains Hayder Wokil, Director Quality and Uptime, Volvo Trucks... Connected trucks are the way to zero unplanned downtime...

* The Netherlands - DAF unveils Future Truck Chassis Concept

-- With a vision to further increasing transport efficiency, DAF has built a prototype distribution truck with a significantly lower kerb weight... Thanks to the application of innovative and patented chassis design innovations in combination with lightweight materials and components, the Future Truck Chassis Concept (FTCC) achieves a remarkable weight saving of no less than 500 kilograms on a 12 tonne LF truck, which already offers a low kerb weight for highest payload... The FTCC is based on DAF’s popular LF-series and built by Leyland Trucks in close cooperation with both Sapa Profiles UK who worked extensively with DAF on the design and provided the aluminium extrusions whilst and CSA Group, who assisted with the validation of the truck by defining and conducting vehicle and rig based testing. The project was co-funded by the British Government’s Innovate UK. Aim was to realize an increased payload at a lower fuel consumption, resulting in reduced CO2 emissions... The FTCC is first of all a study model, which won’t be on the market on short notice. However, it shows innovations which might be considered for the future if financially feasible as well...

* Victoria / Australia - The Fuso Canter 4x4


-- Japanese brand Fuso (a division of Mercedes Benz Australia/Pacific Pty Ltd), has a long history in the development of four-wheel drive commercial vehicles. It started selling the Canter FG single cab in a 4x4 version in 1989. Several years ago, however, Fuso in Japan waived the dual range transmission that had been available on the Canter 4x4... What’s important to note when talking about the new 4x5 is that the doubling of available gear ratios isn’t the only aspect of the Canter to have had an engineering makeover. The chassis rails are now high at the front and drop down at the rear, which is a design specifically adopted for Australia. This permits a significant increase in ground clearance while retaining the standard engine position without having extended spring brackets at the rear – a chassis design so successful that has now become available in other markets as well...
