FUEL EFFICIENCY STANDARDS * USA: 'You can’t haul 80,000 pounds with a Prius'

* Ohio - Truckers skeptical of proposed fuel efficiency standards

-- New rules on fuel efficiency for truckers proposed by the Obama administration could have a significant impact in the state... Tom Balzer, president of the Ohio Trucking Association, would not say he or his members were opposed to the rule, but said skeptical is a better word... Two challenges could arise with new technology: Potential maintenance problems and increased vehicle cost. Blazer said trucks could have maintenance problems because the new technologies have not been properly vetted... The National Automobile Dealers Association and American Truck Dealers criticized the rule as well. The groups released a statement saying they were supportive of fuel economy improvements, but recent history has shown mandates with underestimated compliance costs result in substantially higher prices for commercial vehicles... Both sides agree on one thing, however: Consumers will ultimately pay for any increase in costs...
