* Sweden - International Business Machines Corp., TCS competing to win Volvo’s $500 million IT contract

-- Volvo’s decision to outsource its IT unit activities to an external source is part of a larger plan to turn the company around... International Business Machines Corp. is reportedly competing with one of the largest IT services companies, Tata Consultancy Services Limited, to win an IT outsourcing contract with Swedish truck maker Volvo AB... People familiar with the matter say the IT contract is valued at $500 million, and is expected to extend over a period of approximately three to five years. The contract will be completed within one month, maximum, and will involve Volvo outsourcing activities of its IT business unit to a potential partner... Volvo’s decision to outsource its IT unit activities to an external source comes at a crucial time when the company is faced with declining margins and revenues due to tough competition from companies like Scania AB... The company, when approached to comment on the recent rumors, did clarify that it was indeed looking for possible external service providers to outsource its IT business - in efforts to bring down costs. Volvo, however, refused to reveal the names of the vendors the company was currently in talks with...

* Oregon - Truck maker to expand in Madras


-- Daimler Trucks North America is planning to expand its semitruck-testing facility near the Madras Airport... The largest heavy-duty truck manufacturer in North America, Daimler plans to build a new durability test track, shop and office building with associated structures such as a truck-washing bay and fueling station on 87 acres on Madras Airport property. The Madras City Council agreed in May to lease the property to Daimler... Daimler also liked the climate and property values in Madras, City Administrator Gus Burril said. He told the councilors that the Federal Aviation Administration has indicated the proposed expansion is a conditional use, according to the meeting minutes. Daimler already uses a part-time test track on airport property. The expansion would create a full-time facility, Burril said... The council unanimously approved the lease agreement; the terms will be submitted for its approval later. Two days later, Daimler submitted its application to further develop the test track to the Jefferson County Community Development Department... As part of the project, the company proposes to extend NW Adler Drive to the site, according to the plan. The plan also calls for extending sewer and water service to the site...
