TRUCKING JOBS * USA: Hiring at US trucking companies surges in May

* DC - Trucking companies hired 8,600 employees last month

-- The U.S. trucking industry approached its pre-recession employment peak in May as the U.S. economy added 280,000 jobs. For-hire trucking companies hired 8,600 employees last month, compared with 1,700 workers in April, the Labor Department reported today... The surge in trucking employment, the largest since 12,400 trucking jobs were created in December, pushed the JOC.com For-Hire Trucking Employment Index above 100 for the first time since May 2007. The index rose from 99.6 in April to 100.2 last month... The JOC employment index hit its pre-recession peak of 100.4 in January and February 2007, and fell to a low point of 85.2 in March 2010. Over the five years and two months since, the more than 100,000 for-hire carriers tracked by the BLS have hired 216,700 employees... Those trucking firms lost 220,200 jobs from February 2007 through March 2010. That means trucking is only 3,500 jobs from a full recovery in employment...
