Lima,OH,USA -LimaOhio, by Danae King -November 08, 2014: -- Before Lowell Morris graduated, he had six job offers — his pick of companies to work for... Though unusual in most professions, Morris’ situation is like that of many students studying to become truck drivers — a field where jobs outnumber applicants... Transportation companies are desperately looking for applicants who can drive, pass a drug test and handle a lifestyle change, and they’re having trouble finding them... Experts say the trouble is due to an aging workforce, competition from other industries and the cost of getting a Commercial Drivers License... Salaries average anywhere from $50,000 to $65,000. And with the shortage, many companies are willing to hire drivers right out of school, or, in Morris’ case, before they graduate... Some companies also pay tuition for truck driving school, which can range from $4,000 to $6,000 and could be a deterrent for people to enter the field... Many companies partner with schools or work with them to get employees right out of their CDL training, as several companies are trying to grow to meet the increasing demand for freight transportation... She said the company, with a fleet of 8,500 trucks, has drivers retiring and is also shipping more, causing a need for more drivers...
