* Germany - Mercedes-Benz Future Truck 2025

(Video from Youtube, by cmsGOMEX)
Hannover,Germany -Truck News (CAN), by James Menzies -September 30, 2014: ... We was in Hannover, Germany in the first place, to see Daimler unveil its vision of the future of trucking... We got our first complete look at what the Future Truck may look like. It looked…futuristic? Okay, that was too easy. This was a sleek-looking truck with a clean design free of pretty much any obstruction that can impede airflow. It didn’t even have headlights. Well, they were there, hidden underneath the skin of the vehicle. When turned on, the LED headlights shine through the paint to illuminate the way... Also gone were the rearview mirrors, replaced with a small camera system that displayed the view down the side of the truck and trailer on screens mounted inside the cab. Depending on the position of the truck and the presence of other vehicles, these cameras will self-adjust so the driver always has a complete view of his surroundings. I don’t know how this truck’s cooling system works but there was virtually no grille. The front end lights up when the truck is started and when its Highway Pilot automated driving capabilities are activated, the light changes from white to a pulsating blue which looks very, very cool...

* Sweden - Volvo revises LNG engine plans

Gothenburg,Sweden -Truck News -1 Oct 2014: -- Volvo Trucks no longer intends to produce a compression ignition LNG engine for the North American market... The company issued a statement today saying while it will continue to field-test dimethyl ether (DME) powered vehicles and will continue to offer spark-ignited natural gas engines in its VNM and VNL lines, the compression ignition liquefied natural gas (LNG) engine plans are on hold... Volvo offered the following explanation for the decision: "Volvo Trucks continues to believe that DME—which can be produced from natural gas—holds promise as a heavy-truck fuel. Customer field tests of DME-powered vehicles will continue, but the company has decided not to establish a commercialization date as it continues monitoring market and stakeholder interest in the fuel” ...

Portland,ORE,USA -The Oregonian, by Molly Young -October 01, 2014: -- Oregon's top labor regulator has launched an investigation into allegations of racial discrimination at Daimler Trucks North America in Portland... Five employees, all of whom are of color, complained of repeated harassment and threats throughout their tenures at the truck maker's Swan Island plant, where it makes Western Star trucks... Labor Commissioner, Brad Avakian, in a complaint filed on behalf of the workers, said Daimler Trucks managers heard reports of the discrimination but didn't properly address them. The working environment grew so "intolerable that a reasonable person in the individuals' circumstances would have resigned," according to the complaint... Avakian's complaint will trigger an investigation and, pending the outcome, possible prosecution against Daimler Trucks... A spokesman for the German-owned Daimler Trucks said it takes the allegations seriously and is cooperating fully with the state. The company has also hired its own outside investigator to look into the charges...
