Los Angeles,CAL,USA -MarketWatch, by Jim Jelter -10 June 2014: -- The deadly pileup on the New Jersey Turnpike this past weekend that critically injured comedian Tracy Morgan was a grim reminder of the dangers motorists face when sharing the road with big rigs, especially in the hands of drowsy drivers... Among truckers’ greatest nightmares are cars traveling alongside them in their blind spots, oblivious to the fact that truckers’ peripheral vision is severely limited... Another harrowing experience every trucker knows all too well is being cut off by a passenger car, whose driver has no clue that, at freeways speeds, a 40-ton rig needs about 200 more feet to stop than does a 2-ton sedan... So who’s afraid of whom? ... As for those who might advocate taking trucks off the road to make travel safer for all, consider this: According to the latest DOT survey, trucks carry about 70% of the country’s freight, measured by weight, and nearly 74% measured by commercial value. Changing this would require a massive revamping of the nation’s infrastructure. Given that the United States struggles to maintain existing roadways, this probably isn’t going to happen any time soon...
