* ACT - Industry looks to work with Abbott government

(Image: Melbourne East-West Link project)
Canberra,ACT,Australia -ATN -September 9, 2013: -- Transport industry lobbies gave a hearty welcome to the incoming federal Coalition government, with the Australian Trucking Association (ATA) particularly pleased at the promised repeal of carbon tax provisions... Action against the carbon tax was a key election platform of Prime Minister-elect ,Tony Abbott, and Deputy Prime Minister-elect, Warren Truss, who is tipped to hold on to the infrastructure portfolio once ministries are finalised... The ATA looked forward to working with the Coalition on the other key issues affecting the industry, including better roads and road access, and truck taxes and charges... State leaders were keen to talk up Abbott’s promise to be an “infrastructure prime minister”, with Queensland Premier, Campbell Newman, underlining his Bruce Highway and the Toowoomba Range crossing commitments and Victorian Premier, Dennis Napthine, insisting the election proved the popularity of Melbourne’s contentious East-West Link project...

* New South Wales - Gives ground on fatigue under national regs

Sydney,NWS,Australia -ATN, by Brad Gardner -September 13, 2013: -- New South Wales will grant an extra half hour of work time under a new fatigue management regime to be introduced when national heavy vehicle regulations begin... In a change to the Heavy Vehicle (Adoption of National Law) Amendment Bill made yesterday before the Bill passed the Legislative Assembly, the NSW Government gave some ground on fatigue management to bring the State in line with other jurisdictions... NSW currently limits work time to a maximum of 15 hours for trucking firms accredited under advanced fatigue management (AFM), which is due to be replaced with a new risk-based classification system once the NHVR is fully functioning... Victoria, Queensland and South Australia agreed to a 15.5-hour limit under the new system, but NSW initially clung to its existing work restrictions. The amendment to the Bill removes reference to the 15-hour work limit... However, the amendment also guarantees the NSW roads minister will be able to impose extra conditions beyond those that the NHVR’s fatigue experts may stipulate when accrediting trucking operators to use the scheme... This includes specifying different work hours for drivers while they are working within NSW borders and requiring compliance with additional standards or business rules...

* Comment by a trucker on ATN

"This it's an industry which run by the TWU, ARLTA and ATA for the benefit of the big operators. Its all about making us work longer hours, drive longer & heavier trucks, and undercut our mates just to stay in business. Fatigue laws (& CoR) - failed by the way work has to be counted. NHVR - premature ejaculation. Safe rates - driven by Sheldon's hatred of Coles, and still not immune from undercutting. And drugs? That problem we all know of but never speak about? Plug your ears and cover your eyes and repeat after me - lalalalala."
