* USA - AUTOS' RECALLS: FORD pay $17.35 million fine

* Michigan - Ford pays NHTSA $17.35M fine over recall issue

Dearborn,MICH,USA -The Detroit News, by Karl Henkel -August 1, 2013: -- Ford Motor Co. has paid the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration a $17.35 million fine because the automaker did not notify customers of a defect in a timely manner... Ford had recalled approximately 423,000 2001-2004 Ford Escapes and Mazda Tributes in July 2012, because the gas pedal could remain depressed even after a driver removed their foot from the pedal... Ford’s recall came a week after NHTSA opened an investigation; NHTSA said it did not know how long Ford may have known about a potential problem before the investigation... Ford posted a $2.3 billion North American pre-tax profit last quarter. Based on those figures, Ford can pay the fine with money earned from less than one day of operations... By agreeing to a settlement, Ford did not admit fault to violating the U.S. Safety Act, but is not released from any possible civil or criminal liabilities... 


* DC - 2013 Ford C-Max Hybrid recalled for roof safety issue

A notice on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website puts the number of vehicles potentially affected by the recall at 33,021. Only 2013 Ford C-Max Hybrids without panoramic glass sunroofs are involved... Affected vehicles were built at Ford’s Michigan Assembly plant from January 19, 2012 through June 25, 2013... The issue was discovered during testing by the NHTSA. The agency found that the C-Max failed to conform to federal safety standards for head injury risk...


* California - US driver safety group sues Ford over touch-screen systems

Sacramento,CAL,USA -CNBC -17 Jul 2013: -- Ford Motor has been hit with a proposed class action claiming it neglected to fix defects in vehicle touch-screen control systems that create safety hazards for drivers... The lawsuit was filed Monday in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California by the Center for Defensive Driving, a non-profit driver safety group. The plaintiffs are bringing the lawsuit on behalf of customers who purchased or leased Ford vehicles equipped with a MyFord Touch system, as well as variations like MyLincoln Touch and MyMercury Touch... According to the lawsuit, customers have complained that the system freezes up, malfunctions, blacks out and fails to connect with mobile devices. The complaint said system flaws have created "significant safety risks" for drivers, diverting their attention from the road when the product malfunctions and failing to contact 911 during emergencies as designed...


* DC - Flaming taillights put Mercedes under NHTSA microscope. Over 200,000 C-Class sedans could be recall target

Washington,DC,USA -The Detroit Bureau, by Paul A. Eisenstein -Jul.15, 2013: -- The NHTSA investigation targets Mercedes C-Class sedans from 2008 to 2009... The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is taking a closer look at about 218,000 Mercedes C-Class sedans due to consumer complaints about faulty taillights that reportedly have caught fire in some instances... NHTSA says it has so far received 21 separate owner complaints. And though there have been no reports of injuries the potential for a more serious situation has federal safety investigators worried...
