Southfield,MI,USA -WardsAuto, by Christie Schweinsberg -Aug. 13, 2013: -- Declines in Classes 4, 7 and 8 tempered the 20%-plus growth seen in Classes 5 and 6... Sales of medium- and heavy-duty trucks were flat in July, slipping a slight 0.7% from year-ago on declining deliveries recorded in three of the sector’s five groups... Class 4, Class 7 and Class 8 drops tempered growth in Classes 5 and 6, WardsAuto data shows... Class 8 sales slid 10.3% to 15,340 on a 34.0% plunge by Volvo Truck’s Mack Truck, and an almost 30% drop in International deliveries... Keeping Class 8 volume from falling further were Daimler’s Western Star and the Volvo Truck brand, which posted increases of 31.9% and 31.3%, respectively...

* Washington - Kenworth betting on cabovers

(Photo: Kenworth K270)
Kirkland,WASH,USA -CCJ, by Jason Cannon -August 9, 2013: -- Kenworth is hoping its latest attempt to carve out a niche in the medium-duty cabover market will do something previous models never did – actually carve out a niche in the medium-duty cabover market... The company’s first K370 cabover was presented to Coca-Cola Refreshments in the truck maker’s backyard – Bellevue, Wash. – in May of last year...  Doug Powell, Kenworth’s Medium-Duty Marketing Manager says, the trucks must first overcome an unjust stigma of being tough to drive with excessive cab noise. His plan to do that was launching an aggressive marketing campaign around the K270 and K370 models, and educating dealers about the benefits of the smaller and powerful trucks. And after 18 months in the market, it’s paying off...

* Ford vs. Chevy: Reg cabs show staying power

(Ford photo from KGP Photography)
Pick Up Truck, by Mark Williams -August 10, 2013: -- With the vast majority of half-ton pickup trucks sold in the U.S.sporting four full-sized doors and even the government conspiring against them, you'd think the base-model standard cabs would twindle to the point of extinction. Not so; in fact, they are still a popular choice, especially for big fleet buyers. However, with the spotting of a 2013 Ram 1500 R/T a while back, news from Ford that it will have a 2014 Ford Tremor sport truck in regular-cab configuration, and rumors about a sport-truck-themed performance package slated for the new Chevrolet Silverado 1500, we may start seeing regular-cab numbers climbing in the near future...
(Chevy photo from Chris Doane Photography)
We happen to get an early look at a testing regular cab shortbed new Silverado (oddly, with towing mirrors but without a trailer hitch) and a longbed 2015 F-150 near the same time so we thought we'd pass them onto you. Additionally, we found this Toyota Tundra rendering from the folks at autoevolution.com and thought it was interesting as well. You can bet that at some point down the road, if it's at all possible, we'll be doing a regular cab, big-torque V-8, shortbed shootout...

* California - Should truckmakers still offer regular-cab pickups?

(Photo: Spy shots reveals that, at least at first, Ford will still offer the classic truck body style)
El Segundo,CAL,USA -Automotive News/Motor Trend, by Zach Gale -August 9, 2013: -- Though most trucks are offered in a dizzying array of configurations, automakers could make the buying process easier by eliminating a lower-volume body style. In today’s TOTD, we’re wondering: Should trucks such as the Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado continue to offer regular cabs alongside pickups with compact and full-size rear doors? ... Our latest set of 2015 Ford F-150 spy shots reveals that, at least at first, Ford will still offer the classic truck body style. The Ram 1500, Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, and Toyota Tundra also offer regular-cab trucks, but that’s not the case across the industry. The Honda Ridgeline is a four-door-only truck, while the smallest version of the higher-volume Nissan Frontier and Nissan Titan come with rear-hinged compact doors that open to reveal small, fold-up rear seats...
