Gisborne,NE New Zealand -The Gisborne Herald, by Jeremy Muir -June 10, 2013: -- Concerns about cowboy truck drivers must be galling for the forest industry but need to be taken into context when hearing that Gisborne and Wairoa rate as the deadliest parts of the country in terms of personal risk to road users, as suggested by a New Zealand Herald investigation... According to the Herald, there was one fatality for every 38.7 million kilometres travelled in the Gisborne district compared with 76.5 million in the Waikato and a national average of 135 million. Wairoa was even worse, with a rate of one for every 17 million kilometres... Pointing the finger at the forestry industry may be unfair when drink driving and speed are the highest causes of fatal and injury accidents... Land transport manager Dave Hadfield said that, compared to alcohol and drug related crashes, trucking accidents were considered medium risk... The few cowboys who speed or cut corners need to be weeded out of an industry which is here to stay and which plays an important part in Gisborne’s economy...
