* China - Automakers woo Chinese middle class at Shanghai auto show

Shanghai,SH,China -The Detroit News (USA), by John McCormick -April 19, 2013: -- Aspiring middle class Chinese consumers are the new target of the world's top automakers, and at this week's Auto Shanghai 2013, the focus will be on more expensive and sporty crossover vehicles... The show opens to the public on Sunday... While the growth rate of the world's largest auto market has slowed, the sheer volume — 19.3 million vehicles last year — means no major car company can afford to ignore China... Among U.S. automakers:
* General Motors Co. is showing more than 50 vehicles including the Chevrolet Cruze hatchback and the Cadillac Escalade ESV — available to Chinese buyers for the first time. Opel is also displaying three news models. GM's Buick division, launched its new Encore compact crossover here a few months ago and has already sold 16,000 units.
* Ford Motor Co. will release details on a new concept Saturday. Ford will also show its all-new Fiesta ST and Mondeo midsize car.
* Chrysler Group LLC will use Shanghai for the international debut of its all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The Cherokee, which will be known as "Zi You Guang" in China, will go on sale by the end of the year.

Among the leading German automakers:
* BMW: BMW's Concept X4 is intended to blend the character of a sports coupe and crossover. BMW is also introducing China to its 3 Series GT and M6 Gran Coupe luxury models, as the German brand aims to build on a 40 percent leap in its Chinese sales last year.

* Mercedes-Benz are staging world debuts of small upscale crossovers. Mercedes is revealing a compact luxury crossover concept called the GLA.
* Volkswagen is debuting a variation on its CrossBlue crossover. The four-door Shanghai edition will have a coupe bodystyle and two rows of seats, compared to the previous three-row CrossBlue model.
Amidst the Japan automakers:
* Honda's Acura division is jumping into the compact luxury crossover market, with a new concept being unveiled in Shanghai. A sketch released before the show hinted at a crossover style vehicle smaller than the Acura RDX. Honda will show a minivan concept, likely based on the latest Odyssey revealed in New York...
