* Michigan - January auto sales: Ford up 22%, GM and Chrysler up 16% - Trucks, crossovers, SUVs push sales to post-recession highs

Detroit,MICH,USA -The Detroit News, by Karl Henkel and Melissa Burden - 2 Feb 2013: -- Bigger was better for automakers in January as trucks and crossovers and SUVs drove sales to post-recession highs that could continue through 2013... The continuing recovery of the housing industry, modest economic growth and subdued gas prices all helped to boost sales of medium and large vehicles last month, carrying momentum over from 2012... Overall, new car and light truck sales announced Friday increased 14.2 percent on volume of 1.04 million vehicles in January, compared to 913,287 during the same month a year ago. Of all vehicles sold, trucks were about 49 percent and cars just over 51 percent...


* Illinois - Chrysler unveils limited edition Mopar '13 Dart

Belvidere,ILL,USA -The Detroit News, by Bryce G. Hoffman -January 31, 2013: -- Chrysler Group LLC unveiled a new, limited edition Mopar version of its 2013 Dodge Dart built and customized with parts from the automaker's accessory division... The car features a lowered suspension, low-profile performance tires, upgraded brakes, performance-tuned exhaust and a ground-effects kit, as well as Mopar's trademark black-and-blue paint scheme and badging. The Mopar Dart also boasts a Mopar-themed interior... Only 500 vehicles will be produced at the company's factory in Belvidere, Ill.... The car will be shown next week at the Chicago Auto Show...


* Michigan - Fiat-Chrysler plans 47 new or updated autos in 4 years

Auburn Hills,MICH,USA -The Detroit News, by Bryce G. Hoffman -January 31, 2013: -- The Fiat-Chrysler Group released a new product plan for the North American market Wednesday that calls for introducing 47 new or significantly refreshed models during the next four years — including six Alfa Romeos... That is more than a dozen more than the company had planned to bring to market, according to the last product plan unveiled after Fiat SpA took over Chrysler in 2009 as part of the bailout brokered by the U.S. government... Four previously unplanned Fiat models will come to the United States in 2015, along with two Alfa Romeos that were not part of the original plan. Next year two Dodges and one Chrysler will get refreshes, along with three products from the company's high-performance SRT division... But some products called for in the original plan, including two new Fiat-built Chryslers and Dodges that were to be introduced this year, are being eliminated. That is part of Fiat's European restructuring plan that places more emphasis on the company's luxury brands such as Alfa Romeo and Maserati...


 - AUTOS RECALLS - 

* DC - GM issues new recalls for airbags, rear suspensions 
Washington,DC,USA -The Detroit News, by David Shepardson -January 31, 2013: -- General Motors Co. is recalling nearly 150,000 vehicles in three separate issues... The Detroit automaker said it is recalling about 9,500 2013 Chevrolet Malibu cars that may have suspension bolts that were improperly tightened... The recall includes 8,519 in the United States and just more than 1,000 in Mexico and Canada... GM also is recalling 3,896 2012 Buick Verano, Chevrolet Camaro, Cruze and Sonic cars to address frontal airbags that may not work because of a faulty part... This is an expansion of a GM recall issued in October for 2,949 2012 Verano and Cruze models... GM said no injuries or crashes have been connected to either recall... GM also confirmed it is recalling 2003-04 135,000 Pontiac Vibes that were built at a now-shuttered joint assembly plant in California with Toyota Motor Corp. that had the same defective airbag chip... 


* DC - Toyota's latest big recall covers 1.3M 
Washington,DC,USA -The Detroit News, by David Shepardson -January 31, 2013: -- Toyota Motor Corp. said Wednesday it is recalling 1.3 million vehicles worldwide — including more than 1.1 million in the U.S. — the latest big recall for the automaker that has led in recalls three of the last four years... The recall covers about 900,000 Corolla and Corolla Matrix models worldwide for potentially faulty air bags and 385,000 Lexus IS cars for defective wipers. In the United States, it includes 752,000 2003-04 Corollas and Corolla Matrixes, and about 270,000 2006-12 Lexus IS models...
