* Australia - Forward collision avoidance technology delivers safety results

Adelaide,Queensland,Australia -ATA Friday Facts -20 July 2012: -- The benefits of installing forward collision avoidance technology (FCAT) systems in trucks can be more than nine times the cost, a report by the Adelaide University Centre for Automotive Safety Research shows... The report, "Potential benefits of forward collision avoidance technology", examines 104 crashes around Adelaide that could have been affected by FCAT systems... The report concludes that the benefits of installing FCAT in heavy vehicles are close to $13,700 per vehicle on average. This figure represents the value per vehicle of the reduction in fatalities and injuries delivered by the technology. “The cost of heavy vehicle systems ranges from $1,400 to $5,000. At these prices the benefit cost ratios are easily above unity, ranging from 2.7 to 9.8,” the report says... FCAT systems typically sense other road users or objects in the forward path of a vehicle and perform some combination of actions, which may include priming brake systems, warning the driver, or applying braking...
