* New Jersey - Mercedes sales rise 7.6% in June, extending lead over BMW in U.S.

Montvale,NJ,USA -Bloomberg News/The Detroit News, by Tim Higgins -July 8, 2012: -- Daimler AG's Mercedes-Benz U.S. sales, fueled by a new sport utility vehicle and compact coupe, rose 7.6 percent in June, furthering the German automaker's lead for the year over Bayerische Motoren Werke AG's BMW brand... Mercedes sold 22,231 cars and SUVs last month, the Stuttgart, Germany-based automaker said. BMW gained 0.4 percent to 21,725 compared with the same period last year, the Munich-based company said in a statement, while Toyota Motor Corp.'s Lexus rose 86 percent to 20,022... After six months, Mercedes U.S. sales rose 16 percent to 128,595, to lead BMW by 2,091. BMW, which overtook Toyota's Lexus last year to become the top-selling luxury brand in the U.S., sold 126,504 during the first half, an 11-percent gain. BMW beat Mercedes last year by 2,715 deliveries...


* Michigan - Fiat hits a bump on re-entry into U.S.

Italian carmaker grapples with adapting its European design for American tastes... For consumers old enough to remember, the brand was synonymous with poor quality. The Italian automaker had never enjoyed much success in the United States and, by the time it pulled out of the American market in the early 1980s...  Last month's J.D. Power and Associates' Initial Quality Survey was the first test of Fiat's progress...

 * Italy - Fiat CEO considers closing another plant 

Turin,Italy -AKI/Bloomberg -July 04,2012: -- Fiat Chief Executive Officer, Sergio Marchionne, said he may close a second Italian factory as European auto deliveries sink for fifth straight year. Fiat will shut another plant after closing one in Sicily last year unless it can come up with an economically viable plan to use excess capacity to build cars for North America, Marchionne told reporters late yesterday in Turin. Fiat has delayed the introduction of new models in Europe and is cutting investment in the region by 500 million euros this year...  Fiat’s first-quarter operating losses in the region almost doubled to 207 million euros...  The Italian carmaker extended temporary layoffs for about 5,000 workers, mainly white-collar staff, at its executive headquarters in Turin for 14 working days starting from July 30, a union official said this week...


* France - Renault-Nissan Lands 15,000 Vehicles Contract with Danone

Paris,France -Enviromental Leader -July 6, 2012: -- The Renault-Nissan Alliance has landed a five-year contract to provide Paris-based food company Danone with a 15,000-vehicle fleet. This is a first-of-its-kind deal for the alliance, a 12-year-old strategic partnership between the two major automakers. A full range of vehicles will be provided to Danone in 25 countries, the alliance said. Danone fleet managers can select vehicles from four brands under the Renault-Nissan Alliance: Renault, Dacia, Nissan and Infiniti. The products range from passenger cars to commercial vehicles, including electric models.The highest volume of cars provided in the fleet will be in Russia, Mexico and France...

 * Canada - Light vehicle sales up 2.8% in June 
Ottawa,ONT,Canada -AutomotiveWorld -July 06, 2012: -- Following a 17.9% year-on-year increase in May, Canada's light vehicle market continued to improve, albeit by a much smaller degree. A total of 169,459 passenger cars, SUVs and pick-ups were sold in Canada, up 2.8% in June than May... 

 * Japan - Regular vehicle sales in June '12: Up 43.6 Percent Tokyo,Japan -MBA Cars -July 4, 2012: -- Domestic sales of regular new cars, trucks and buses increased 40.9 percent in June, while sales of mini vehicles rose 48.4 percent on the year. Overall, Japan's new motorvehicle market rose 43.6 percent on 505,342 units sold. The data compare with a post-tsunami June 2011... On a group level, Toyota dominates the Big 3 with strong growth and regained market share. Honda also recovered strongly and gained share. Nissan continues to lose share at home... 

 * UK - June new car sales rise 3.5% 
 London,EN,UK -Just Auto, by Graeme Roberts -5 July 2012: -- New car registrations in the UK rose for a fourth successive month with a 3.5% rise in June to 189,514 units... Registrations over the first half of the year increased 2.7% to 1,057,680 units... Private demand recovered in the first half of 2012, up 8.7% with June continuing the trend, up 9.8%... Technological gains helped average new car CO2 emissions fall 4% to 134.1g/km in first half of 2012...

* Brazil - Vehicle production falls 9.4% in H1 2012 
Sao Paulo,SP,Brazil -SDV live(Esmerk (Finland) -7 Jul 2012: -- Vehicle production fell 9.4% in Brazil in the first six months of 2012, reaching 1.55mn units, despite a series of measures implemented to stimulate the industry. According to the Brazilian Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Association, Anfavea,  June 2012 was the second best month on records with sales of over 350,000 vehicles. This was the result of a cut on IPI tax which made vehicles more accessible but which has not had any impact on manufacturing activities yet. Both VW and GM have spoken about voluntary redundancies already. Mercedes-Benz and Scania have suspended workers and changed shifts at their truck manufacturing units...

* Argentine - Auto industry production continued to slow down in June 
 City Buenos Aires,ARG -Mercopress (Uruguay) -July 6, 2012: -- Argentine automobile production fell 12% in June from the previous month and plunged 34.4% from a year earlier, according to an industry trade group. The auto industry produced 52,983 vehicles in June compared with 60,206 units in the previous month and 80,795 a year earlier... The Argentine auto-making association, Adefa, said in a statement that vehicle output during the first half of the year fell 15.4% on the year to 331,798 units... Exports totaled 29,885 vehicles in June, up 4.3% on the month but down about 36% on the year. Exports in the first half fell 28.4% on the year to 173,472 units... 

 * South Africa - 2012 light vehicle sales to rise 7-8% 


 Johannesburg,South Africa -Automotive World -July 06, 2012: -- Light vehicle sales in South Africa are expected to rise 7-8% this year, following growth of 15.9% in 2011, according to Automotive World’s Sales Forecast: South Africa’s new vehicle market... Last year, the country’s total vehicle market (cars, trucks, and buses) increased 19.2% to 587,500 units, marking the second consecutive year of increase. Light vehicle sales increased 15.9% to 545,600 units. There was a particularly large increase of 38% in the small car segment, which overtook the pickup (‘bakkies’) segment to become the market’s largest... In the country’s heavy commercial vehicle (HCV) sector demand increased by 18.2% in 2011... 

* Ford, GM post China sales records 

Detroit,MICH,USA -The Detroit News, by Karl Henkel -July 10, 2012: -- The Chinese arms of Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Co. both set sales records in June, but an economic report released Monday forecasts a slowdown in the world's fastest-growing economy... Ford set a passenger vehicle sales record for the third consecutive month in June in the world's most highly populated country, and overall vehicle sales are up slightly during the first six months of the year, the Dearborn-based automaker said Monday...

* China - Steering system fault prompts BMW recall

Beijing,China -Xinhua News Agency/Autoevolution -July 05, 2012: -- The import company BMW (China) Automotive Trading and the BMW Brilliance Automotive JV are to recall nearly 3,000 BMW models due to defects in their steering issue... Variations in the electrical power of the system, causing it to instantly lose assistance, making it very difficult to control the car...

- STRIKES - 

 * South Korea - GM Korea union plans partial strike next week

 Seoul,SK -Reuters -July 5, 2012: -- Workers at General Motors' South Korean factories plan a partial strike for three days next week, with other carmakers likely to follow suit as annual wage talks stall over working conditions... The labor union of Hyundai Motor, South Korea's top automaker, is set to vote next week to join the umbrella Metal Workers Union in staging a partial strike on July 13 and July 20, which if realized, will be Hyundai Motor's first strike in four years... Affiliate Kia Motors also plans to vote on July 11 on strike action... The most contentious issue is a union demand to end overnight work, but automakers are concerned about a potential loss of production... GM Korea's union leadership decided to idle work at several plants for six to eight hours on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, a union spokesman said of an industrial action that would make GM Korea the first carmaker in South Korea to launch a strike this year...
