* Japan - Mitsubishi Develops Lighter, Smaller Electric Car Motor

(Photo: Mitsubishi Electric combined motor and inverter)
Kawasaki-shi, Kanagawa,Japan -Green Car Reports, by Antony Ingram -Mar 14, 2012: -- Weight, we're told, is the enemy of the car. In electric cars, that makes the job of improving range more difficult...   To this end, Mitsubishi Electric is developing a new electric motor for use in electric cars, half the size and significantly lighter than current units... Silicon carbide allows for thinner, and therefore less resistant chips, lowering electrical losses - by up to 50 percent compared to regular silicon-based inverters. The motor itself is more magnetically efficient, and allows for a 5 percent increase in power compared to existing motors... What all that means for the end user in their electric car is more space available for passengers and batteries...

* Sweden - Details Emerge On Volvo's New Four-Cylinder Engines

Gothenburg,Sweden -Motor Authority, by Kurt Ernst -Mar 14, 2012: --  Last fall, Volvo announced that it would move away from five and six-cylinder engines, switching instead to three and four-cylinder variants across its entire model range. The “why” is no mystery, as the move will increase fuel economy from individual models by as much as 35-percent... Volvo’s twincharger design uses a supercharger to boost power at low engine speeds, coupled with a turbocharger to boost power at higher engine speeds...

* Canada - Weichai Westport Natural Gas Engine Launched in China

Vancouver,BC,CAN -Westport China/Hybrid Cars, by Philippe Crowe -March 13, 2012: -- Today Canadian-based Westport Innovations introduced what is being called China's first natural gas engine featuring Westport high pressure direct injection (HPDI) technology... The company says the engine, based on the Weichai Power WP12 engine platform, is the result of China's first joint venture for HPDI natural gas engines, named Weichai Westport Inc... Westport says the HPDI technology for the 12-liter engine maintains the power and performance of the base diesel engine, but allows the replacement of up to 95 percent of diesel fuel with cleaner burning, less expensive natural gas... The engine delivers the same 480 horsepower and 1200 pound-feet @ 1500 rpm torque as the original diesel engine, the company says...
