* China - Prepares to export trucks and surplus cars

Beijing,China -Reuters Breakingviews/The Global and Mail (Canada), by Wei Gu -Jan. 16, 2012: -- Demand in the world’s largest auto market has shifted to a lower gear. China’s vehicle sales grew just 5 per cent by volume in 2011, the slowest pace in a decade. Gridlocks and pollution limit growth. Meanwhile, foreign auto makers face two problems: not only are they less welcome in China, but they may soon have to deal with domestic rivals trying to export their surplus... Truck makers have already set a precedent. KPMG predicts that in 2015, one in every five trucks manufactured in China will be made for export. Car makers elsewhere have even more reason to worry, since China’s overcapacity is the size of the whole German car market. Before long, vehicles could be China’s most controversial export...


* Canada - New vehicle sales drop in November

Ottawa,ONT,CAN -Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters, by Steve Coleman -January 16, 2012:  -- Foreign car makers are still gaining ground on North American built vehicles, even though sales fell as a whole for November and December...  In Canada, the number of new vehicles sold in November fell one per cent to 137,640 units. Declines were recorded for both trucks and passenger vehicles...  Preliminary numbers for December say the total number of new vehicles sold fell another three percentage points, Statistics Canada says...  Trucks were the hardest hit category in November. The category, which includes trucks, buses, vans and mini-vans, saw a 1.3 per cent decrease for the month and fell to 80, 460 units for November... The number of new passenger cars on the road fell 0.5 per cent from the previous month to 57,180 units...
