* Sweden - Volvo unveils upgraded environmental footprint calculator

Sweden -Fleet Owner (USA) -Sep 26, 2011: -- Customers can calculate their environmental footprint with a new upgraded calculator from Volvo Trucks... The new calculator allows users to compare a truck’s specific environmental impact with Volvo’s recently launched models, including the FH16 750 hp., the Volvo FM Methane Diesel, and the Volvo FE hybrid... The calculator also makes it possible to evaluate the environmental benefits of using alternative fuels instead of fossil fuels. Entire fleets can be compared as well... The tool also allows customers to identify their current eco-footprint and provides tips for cutting their climate impact...


* India - Mining ban to impact tipper demand in Karnataka

Mumbai,India -Business Standard, by Swaraj Baggonkar & Shubhashish -September 24, 2011: -- The ban on illegal mining in Karnataka is adversely impacting the sales of trucks and tippers. Manufacturers such as Ashok Leyland, India’s second-biggest truck maker and VE Commercial Vehicles, are expecting a hit on retail offtake of trucks if the Supreme Court ban on mining is not lifted... According to industry players, about 9,500-10,000 tippers are sold every year in iron ore producing states like Karnataka and Goa... Chennai-based Ashok Leyland, signaling a broader slowdown in overall demand for commercial vehicles, marked a dip of 4.6 per cent in sales of medium and heavy commercial vehicles of last month to 4,584 units as against 4,796 units sold in the same month a year ago... Tata Motors, India's biggest commercial vehicle maker, however posted a growth of 12 per cent in sales of medium and heavy commercial vehicles last month stating that the company has not experienced any impact of the ban on mining in the two reported states...


* India - Mahindra & Mahindra SUV XUV 500 launched

* India - Mahindra and Navistar plans new products

Chennai,India -My Digital FC, by G Balachandar -Sep 27 2011: -- Mahindra Navistar Automotives, a 51:49 commercial vehicle joint venture between Mahindra & Mahindra and US-based Navistar, plans new products launches in the heavy duty segment during this fiscal, while strengthening dealer network and after sales service to boost sales and market share...  The company has been selling little less than 200 trucks a month and had sold 827 units during April-August 2010 period. Dr Pawan Goenkapresident, Automotive & Farm Equipment Sector had earlier said that the ramp up of sales has been slower than what they had originally planned because the customers are taking time accepting a new brand in the heavy truck business...


* China - A success story for automakers in dire times

Guangzhou,China -China Daily, by Wang Chao -29 Sept 2011: -- Beiqi Foton Motor Co Ltd, China's largest commercial vehicle manufacturer by production volume and sales, took another step toward its goal of creating more new-energy vehicles with the opening of its new electric-vehicle factory in South China's Guangdong province...  The new factory began operations on Wednesday and has an estimated annual production capacity of 20,000 autos...  The opening of the factory comes only two days after Foton signed with the Pinggu district government in Beijing to build the country's largest industrial park for producing according to municipal authorities. The park will manufacture and sell components and high-end equipment for the production of new-energy vehicles...  The Guangdong factory will produce extended-range, plug-in electric buses with an average range of 30 km when running purely on electricity. The vehicle can be fueled with gas and can be plugged it into an electrical outlet...  Foton has built eight new-energy factories across China to produce buses, pickup trucks and heavy-duty trucks...

* India: Tata Motors working on all-aluminium engines

Mumbai,India -The Hindustan Times, by Manu P Toms -September 25, 2011:  --  Tata Motors is planning to take the aluminum route to woo the price-conscious Indian consumer. At a time when the sales of its products are falling faster than the industry average, the company is working on lightweight all-aluminum engines for its passenger car offerings, which being lighter than the present cast-iron blocks, offer better fuel efficiency. All the company’s future car engines will feature all-aluminum (head and block) construction, for which work is in progress, said the company spokesperson...  Tata Motors’ sales in the first five months of the fiscal year dropped 21% to 99,129 units...  Currently, Tatas claim a mileage of 25-kilometre per litre mileage (kmpl) for its diesel hatchback Indica and the Indigo compact sedan. Based on the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) — testified voluntary fuel economy disclosures by carmakers — 25 kmpl is so far the highest in India...


* Poland - Fiat To Lay Off 435 Agency Staff In Poland On Lower Orders


Warsaw,Poland -Dow Jones, by Marcin Sobczyk -September 26, 2011: -- Fiat Auto Poland, the Polish unit of Italy's Fiat SpA, will lay off 435 people at its production plant in Tychy because of lower-than-anticipated car orders from outside Poland, the company's spokesman told Dow Jones Newswires Monday... Nearly 5,500 employees will continue to work at the plant following the move and the company doesn't plan to make any of its own staff redundant at this point... Fiat's Tychy plant will also put production on hold for two days in September and another two days in October, in response to the lower orders, he said... Fiat expects to manufacture nearly 500,000 cars this year... The car maker sells nearly 98% of its Polish production outside the country, he added...
