* Oregon - Freightliner aims for 8 mpg in 2015

Portland,ORE,USA -Land Line Magazine -Sept 2011: -- The people at Freightliner say they’ve set a goal of improving the fuel efficiency of the Cascadia by 5 percent every two years. If they can pull it off, it will mean the Cascadia’s fuel use will improve from 6.7 miles per gallon in 2010 to almost 8 mpg in 2015...  Freightliner says it’s already boosted the tractor’s mileage with aerodynamic fairings and expects to introduce more aerodynamic improvements as well as mechanical advances and things like switching to a 5W-30 engine oil...


* Illinois - Navistar announces plant closings

Warrenville,ILL,USA -Land Line Magazine -Sept 2011: -- After sitting unused for two years, Navistar says it’s permanently shutting down its plant in Chatham, Ontario, Canada, where as many a thousand workers used to make International trucks. It’s also closing a truck chassis plant in Union City, IN, USA, that employed 225 workers...  Navistar says it has enough production capability at other plants – in the U.S. and in Mexico – to pick up the slack...  The company and Canadian Auto Workers Union had a history of conflict at the Chatham plant, including a six-week strike in 2002. At the time, Navistar threatened to move the Chatham work to Mexico but changed its mind after workers made concessions and the government provided subsidies...


* Virginia - Volvo goes for better mpg, sweet spot


VIR,USA -Land Line Magazine - Sept 2011: -- Volvo says its new powertrain, the XE-13, will improve fuel efficiency by 3 percent or more in its VN series trucks. A Volvo press release says the system produces a low-rpm cruising speed while increasing torque. The company says the result is that the engine runs at its ‘”sweet spot” at all speeds...


* Wiscosin - Oshkosh Corp., union at odds over contract. Strike possible if deal not reached by Friday night

Oshkosh,WIS,USA -The Journal Sentinel, by Rick Barrett -Sept. 26, 2011: -- As Congress weighs billions of dollars in defense spending cuts, there's a standoff at Oshkosh Corp., where the military-truck maker and its labor union are in contract negotiations affecting thousands of jobs... The standoff comes as Congress has agreed to cut military spending by $350 billion over the next 10 years. The defense budget will automatically be cut by another $500 billion over that period if lawmakers fail to reach a deficit-cutting deal by November... A short-term strike would not rattle the military too much, according to Hasik. But an extended walkout could jeopardize Oshkosh's defense contracts...
