ELECTRIC TRUCKS * USA - UPS adds 130 more hybrid-electric vehicles to fleet

Seattle,WASH,USA -Penton Media/Fleet Owner -Sep 22, 2011: -- UPS is deploying 130 hybrid-electric vehicles (HEV) to its U.S. fleet, bringing it to more 380 such vehicles. The package-delivery giant has more than 2,000 alternative-powered vehicles in its fleet... The vans are Freightliner Custom Chassis trucks with a hybrid power system from Eaton Corp. They will operate in California, New York, and New Jersey... UPS said it expects to save 58,371 gals. of fuel annually with this deployment, representing a 30% fuel economy savings, and reduce CO2 emissions by 592 metric tons... When combined with the 250 HEV delivery trucks already in operation, UPS expects to reduce fuel consumption by approximately 191,000 gal. a year and cut CO2 emissions by over 1,700 metric tons...


* Minnesota - Electric vehicle information and demo center being built

Eden Prairie,MN,USA -Fleet Owner -Sep 26, 2011: -- GE Capital Fleet Services is setting up a “customer experience and learning center” for electric vehicles in Eden Prairie, MN. The center will showcase GE’s portfolio of electric vehicle solutions and allow customers to evaluate electric vehicles and other alternative fuel vehicles... The facility is expected to open in the spring of 2012, and will include a variety of electric cars and trucks from different manufacturers. GE experts will assist customers in analyzing vehicle performance, driver experiences, service requirements, and operational efficiencies... Alternative-powered vehicles from other energy sources will eventually be added, GE said... There will be an education center featuring classrooms for presentations, training, and discovery workshops as well as interactive displays; a solar carport and charging center that can charge up to 11 vehicles simultaneously; an experience center and showroom to help customers evaluate vehicles in a variety of configurations; and a private half-mile driving course that will allow customers to experience a variety of cars and trucks in different driving conditions. GE will keep alternative fuel vehicles at the center on a permanent basis for customer use on the driving course...


* USA - NYC pharmacy goes electric

New York,NY,USA -Fleet Owner -Sep 22, 2011: -- Duane Reade, New York City’s largest drug-store chain with more than 250 locations, is deploying Smith Electric Vehicle’s Newton all-electric commercial trucks into its delivery fleet...  Duane Reade is the first retail pharmacy in the U.S. to employ all-electric commercial vehicles, Smith said...  The trucks will operate in heavy New York City traffic with frequent stopping and starting. The zero-emissions Newton can travel up to 100 mi. on a single charge while carrying a payload of 16,000 lbs...   The Newton also features a regenerative braking system that reduces wear on the brakes while restoring charge to the battery...
