Daimler is accused of bribing Croatian officials during sale of fire-fighting vehicles

Zagreb,Croatia -Agence France Presse/Industry Week -April 6, 2011: -- Croatian police on April 5 detained three people suspected of being involved into the alleged bribery of local officials by the German car maker Daimler, the interior ministry said... The three are suspected of abuse of power and money laundering which illegally earned them 921,320 euros ($1.3 million)... According to local media reports, in 2003 the then government struck a deal with Daimler to buy 210 fire-fighting vehicles worth some 800 million kunas (110 million euros). Media said that the car maker gave Croatian officials some 4.7 million euros in bribes to ensure the deal... Daimler has admitted making hundreds of improper payments worth tens of millions of dollars to foreign government officials in at least 22 countries, including Croatia, between 1998 and 2008... Two of the men arrested owned a local car parts firm which received 250,000 euros from an unnamed German-based company in an apparent loan that was never repaid, the interior ministry statement said. The third man allegedly received 1.6 million euros on his US-based firm account for consultant services that were never provided, it said... The fictitious services were presented as being given to a German-based company for moves to be made to reach a deal with the Croatian government to buy 210 fire-fighting vehicles in 2003, the statement said...


* Japan - Isuzu truck production resumes; Toyota Cnd plant to close

Tokyo,Japan -Truck News (CAN) -6 April 2011: ... Isuzu halted production at its Fujisawa factory after the earthquake and tsunami hit on March 11... Then on April 5, the entire line was opened up for business again... The Fujisawa plant manufactures N-Series trucks, diesel engines and components for the North American market, as well as commercial vehicles and parts for markets worldwide... Isuzu will announce a timetable for a return to full production at a later date... Other truckmakers including Hino and Mitsubishi Fuso did not close plants but many parts suppliers in the earthquake-struck region were closed so production across the manufacturing chain has been crippled... Meanwhile, closer to home a shutdown is looming at the Woodstock, ONT, Canada, Toyota plant... Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada spokesperson Pat Clement said the timing and duration of the shutdown is unknown... Toyota gets about 15 percent of its parts from Japan for cars and trucks built in North America...


* Germany - MAN SE Said to Plan Russia Expansion With St. Petersburg Heavy Truck Plant
Munich,Germany --Bloomberg, by Andreas Cremer - Apr 7, 2011: -- MAN, Europe’s third-largest maker of commercial vehicles, expects the Russian market for trucks weighing over 6 metric tons to more than triple to about 170,000 vehicles by 2020...   MAN SE, seeking to challenge Daimler AG in the fast-growing Russian heavy truck market, may announce plans to build a factory in St. Petersburg as early as next week, three people familiar with the matter said...     The factory will be MAN’s first production site in Russia as the truckmaker expands in emerging markets to take advantage of growing demand for commercial vehicles. * China - Beiqi Foton, China’s truck and bus maker, driving in

Mumbai/New Delhi,India -DNA, by Sindhu Bhattacharya & Yuga Chaudhari -Apr 4, 2011: -- Beiqi Foton Motor Company, a Chinese firm, is planning to set up a commercial vehicle manufacturing plant in Pune, and sell its buses through a separate venture... Foton, which claims to be the largest commercial vehicle maker not just in China but all of Asia, has been circling India for more than a year and has held detailed discussions with Tier I component suppliers... The company has zeroed in on Pune where its commercial vehicle plant could be operational as soon as 2012... Some industry veterans have already been hired by Foton and a management would also be in place soon, two people familiar with developments said... As of now, Foton does not have an Indian partner...
