TRUCKMAKERS' NEWS WORLDWIDE * Australia - CAT Trucks confirms October launch date
One of the better kept secrets in the Australian transport industry is now solved!...
Sydney,NSW,Australia-ATN by Gary Worrall -October 8, 2010: ... CAT Trucks saying it will launch into the Australian market in October... The two models, the CT 610 and CT 630, will be in dealers this month... The trucks are built in a section of the Caterpillar earthmoving division at Tullamarine, converted into a truck manufacturing line, before being delivered to the national dealer network... A total of four variants will be offered, with the CT 610 and CT 630 both available in day cab and extended cab configuration. All trucks use the proven Eaton-Fuller 18-speed manual transmission... The main technical specification for the CT 610 is a GVM of 24.5 tonnes and GCM of 57 tonnes. The C 13 engine provides 470 horsepower and 1,650 ft-lb of torque... The larger CT 630 uses the C15 engine, rated at 550 horsepower and 1,850 ft-lb of torque. The GVM also sits at 24.5 tonnes, although the GCM is boosted to 72 tonnes... * France - Renault Sells $4.4 Billion Stake in Volvo
Paris,France -Bloomberg/Transport Topics -7 Oct 2010: -- Renault SA, France’s second-largest automaker, is selling a 14.9% stake in Volvo AB valued at 3.15 billion euros, or about $4.4 billion... The move takes advantage of a surge in the Sweden-based truck maker’s shares to pay down Renault’s debt... Increasing truck orders allowed Gothenburg, Sweden-based Volvo and competitors Daimler AG and Scania AB to beat earnings estimates or raise their profit outlook this year... Volvo AB is the parent company of Volvo Trucks North America and Mack Trucks...
* Germany - MAN's Concept S promises to use 25% less fuel
Munich,Germany -Engineering News (South Africa), by Irma Venter -7 October 2010: -- German truck-builder MAN has unveiled a new-look future vehicle, the Concept S, that promises much reduced fuel consumption and, therefore, carbon dioxide (CO2) emission levels... The streamlined semitrailer tractor differs radically from today's typically cube-shaped trucks. The design of the MAN Concept S was adjusted in a wind tunnel in order to achieve low wind resistance, corresponding to that of a modern passenger car... Thanks solely to its aerodynamic form, the MAN Concept S – with an appropriately modified trailer – uses up to 25% less fuel than a comparable, conventional 40 t semitrailer tractor. This is the equivalent of a reduction in CO2 emissions of 25%... With the Concept S, MAN reports that the company is also making a contribution to the current discussion on the statutory length restrictions applicable to commercial vehicles in Europe... In order to realise the efficiency potential proved by the Concept S, tractors and trailers will have to become longer if they are going to provide the accustomed amount of interior space and loading volume. (A round-shaped loading space of the same length and height offers less volume than a square-shaped container, for example)... MAN also emphasises that changes to the road infrastructure for this purpose will not be necessary... (Picture by MAN: The Concept S promises a 25% cut in the fuel bill)
* Sweden - Scania to research bio-fuel engines
Gothenburg,Sweden -HGV Ireland (IRE) -October 8, 2010: -- Scania has been granted SEK 30 million – about €3.3 million – by Sweden’s Strategic Vehicle Research and Innovation Initiative (FFI) to develop a bio-fuel engine intended for heavy commercial vehicles... This research will show how the best characteristics of the diesel and the Otto principle can be combined in an engine that can operate on both alcohol- and gaseous methane-based fuels... Scania will focus on developing an engine using sustainable biofuels that will combine the high energy efficiency of diesel (compression ignition) technology with the more efficient exhaust aftertreatment system of Otto (spark ignition) technology... Scania has been granted FFI funding for the phase of its research project that involves the development of innovative technology for both alcohol- and methane gas-based fuels. This research includes systems for premixed combustion and ignition of fuel, gas exchange systems, optimised valve performance, exhaust gas recirculation and the use of advanced catalyst technology for efficient exhaust aftertreatment... * UK - Heavy truck sales plummet; van sales keep on rising
London,UK -Road Transport, by Kevin Swallow -6 October 2010: -- Following recent growth, heavy truck registrations (6.0-tonnes-plus) fell 33.1% in September to 3,761 units, while vans continued to increase, rising 24.4%, according to the SMMT's monthly update... Year-to-date figures for heavy trucks in 2010 make for slightly more optimistic reading as they are only down 19.8% to 18,843 registrations, compared with 23,503 last year. The only manufacturer in the 6.0-tonnes-plus truck sector to make a gain this year is Scania, which has registered 2,549 units - up 5%... The most affected manufacturers have been DAF, down 33.5% to 4,812 units; MAN, down 29.8% to 1,627; and Volvo Trucks, down 28.9% to 1,942... Vans, however, remain on the up. September figures have risen to 35,309 units, and year-to-date are up 18.4% to 168,554 units... In the light truck sector, 3.51 tonnes to 6.0-tonnes, the market fell 2.8% through September to 872 units, but year-to-date remains up 4.6% at 5,577 units...
* India - Commercial vehicle sales rise 29.6 percent in September
Mumbai,India -Reuters, by Prashant Mehra & Devidutta Tripathy -Oct 8, 2010: -- Car sales in India climbed almost a third in September versus a year, industry data showed on Friday, but growth is seen moderating as borrowing costs rise and as parts makers struggle to meet demand... Automakers such as utility vehicle leader Mahindra & Mahindra, and Maruti Suzuki, which produces every second new car sold in the country, have had to curtail production in recent months because of the slow pace of growth in component supplies... Still, India is one of the world's fastest growing market for cars as a rapidly expanding economy boosts incomes and consumer spending... The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) said sales of trucks and buses, a barometer of economic activity, rose 29.6 percent to 59,455 units in September... Brussels,Belgium -Just-Auto (UK) -8 October 2010: -- Truckmakers are protesting European Union plans to impose strict curbs on C02 emissions, calling them unrealistic and ill-drafted... Volvo Trucks, Fiat's Iveco unit and DAF have asked the European Commission and the European Parliament to redraft the planned law, warning them of chaos in an industry which employs 250,000 people... The EU wants to cut C02 emissions by 20% from their 1990 level, by 2020. Reducing pollution from heavy trucks is to be part of this plan... The EU is debating plans to cut emissions from vans and light trucks to 175g/km by 2016 and truckmakers fear a similar scheme might be imposed on heavy trucks... The executives said the current plan would encourage companies to produce more lighter trucks and fewer large ones. As a result, there would be more vehicles on the roads, more congestion and more CO2 emissions... The truckmakers said they would carry on with plans to increase fuel efficiency in heavy trucks by 20% by 2020...
