TRUCKMAKERS NEWS * USA - Class 8 Truck Orders Jump 21.6 Percent
But many fleets postpone orders, wait for stronger recovery, FTR says
Nashville,IN,USA -The Journal of Commerce Online, by William B. Cassidy -Oct 7, 2010: -- New orders for heavy trucks jumped 21.6 percent in September from the previous month, FTR Associates reports... But many truckers are still waiting for signs of a more stable economic recovery before replacing older vehicles, the Nashville, Ind.-based firm said... The research firm released preliminary data showing September Class 8 truck total net orders for all major North American truck makers at 14,872... September's increase represented a strong leap in demand from the summer. Net truck orders rose 8.3 percent in August from July. Year-over-year, orders were up 38.8 percent in September, compared with a 16.8 percent increase in August... Despite the strong month-to-month increase, FTR Associates believes many carriers are still reluctant to order replacement vehicles or add new capacity... October and November are typically the strongest in the buying cycle, he said.

* Illinois - Navistar Defense Wins First Navy Contract for Heavy Truck Tractors
Warrensville,ILL,USA -TruckingInfo -7 Oct 2010: -- Navistar Defense has received an award for $18.9 million from the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) for 38 International 5000-MV heavy truck tractors (HTTs). The company's first contract with the U.S. Navy includes three option periods for additional vehicle orders... A heavy-haul tractor, the 5000-MV HTT unit will support Navy Seabee transportation needs. The vehicles incorporate a variety of armoring solutions derived from the International MaxxPro Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle. Units include a manual 18-speed transmission and a MaxxForce D 13-liter engine... Production of HTT vehicles will begin in early 2012.
