TRUCKMAKERS' NEWS * USA - Navistar Lays Off 250 Workers at Ohio Truck Plant
Warrensville,ILL,USA -The Springfield (OH) News-Sun/Transport Topics -12 Oct 2010: -- Navistar International Corp. sent layoff notices to about 250 workers at an Ohio truck assembly plant... The notices were given Friday to about United Auto Workers employees at the company’s Springfield, Ohio plant... The layoffs were described as temporary but the notices to employees did not give a possible return date, the News-Sun said... UAW members have been working without a contract since Oct. 1, and talks were to resume this week following the weekend, a Navistar spokesman told the newspaper... The company moved production parts out of the plant two weeks ago, and the last truck rolled off its production line on Sept. 27...
* Medium-Duty Production to Rise Slowly
Cambridge,MA,USA -Transport Topics -12 Oct 2010: -- Medium-duty truck manufacturers will produce about 12% more units in 2010 than in 2009, and even more in 2011, but the ongoing recession in the housing and construction sectors will limit faster growth, an industry analyst said... Full-year production of medium-duty (Class 5-7) vehicles will grow to 18% year-over-year in 2011, Steve Tam, vice president-commercial vehicle sector with ACT Research Co., said in a monthly report.... Heavy-duty production is expected to grow 26% in 2010 compared with 2009, and another 57% in 2011, due to freight growth, Tam said...
* Eaton Supplying Hybrid System for Mercedes-Benz BlueTec Atego Hybrid

Eaton supplied a hybrid system which included the lithium-ion battery pack and electric motor, and worked closely with Daimler to jointly develop the power management logic and controls... The Mercedes-Benz Atego BlueTec Hybrid was the first hybrid truck in Europe to gain European Type Approval.
