* DC - DOT Freight Transport Index Rises in June
Washington,DC,USA -Transport Topics -11 Aug 2010: -- The Department of Transportation’s freight transportation services index rose 4.1% in June from a year ago, the fourth straight year-over-year increase... The freight TSI, which rose 0.2% from May, has fallen 11.8% in five years since June 2005 and is down 2.3% from June 2000... Its 2.6% gain in March was the first year-to-year increase since July 2008... The index is 13.3% below its historic peak of 112.9 set in May 2006, and up 4.7% from the recent low of 93.5, set in May 2009... The TSI, which uses 2000 as its base year, is a seasonally adjusted monthly index measuring the output of services provided by the for-hire transportation industries, including railroad, air, truck, inland waterways, pipeline and local transit...
* Kansas - YRC Worldwide tonnage up 11%
Overland Park,KN,USA -TI (UK) -4 Aug 2010: -- US trucking company YRC Worldwide Inc. has reported its second quarter 2010 results showing a net loss of $9.5 million. As a comparison, the company reported a net loss of $309 million in the second quarter of 2009... YRC Regional Transportation tons per day were up 4.6%, shipments per day down 3.1%, revenue per hundredweight down 2.8% and revenue per shipment up 4.9%... Compared with the previous quarter, YRC National Transportation tons per day were up 11.0%, shipments per day up 8.0%, and revenue per shipment up 0.9%. YRC Regional Transportation tons per day were up 15.5%, shipments per day up 13.8%, and revenue per shipment up 0.5%...
* DC - EPA Helps Owner-Operators Retrofit 300 Trucks. $1 million grant to partly fund auxiliary power to cut engine idling
Washington,DC,USA -The Journal of Commerce Online, by John D. Boyd -Aug 10, 2010: -- About 300 independent truckers in the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association who operate in parts of the central and southwestern U.S. will be able to tap a $1 million federal grant to help pay for idle-reduction equipment... The Environmental Protection Agency said it awarded the money to OOIDA, in Grain Valley, Mo., to help fund a project that could put auxiliary power units on about 300 long-haul trucks. With APUs, drivers can turn off their diesel engines during idle times at terminals or rest areas and still operate air conditioners or other accessories... An EPA spokesman said the grant money can cover 40 percent of an APU’s cost while the trucker pays 60 percent. The agency said the project’s total cost can top $2.6 million... To qualify for funding through the independent drivers’ trade group, the trucks must operate in the EPA’s Regions 6 and 7, which include the states of Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas... Truckers will need to apply to OOIDA for the grant, and will be selected competitively, the agency spokesman said...
