* Germany - Mercedes Benz predicts Euro-6 price hike

Stuttgart,Germany -Road Transport (UK), by Andy Salter -13 May 2010: -- Mercedes-Benz has become the latest truck manufacturer to issue a warning over a massive price hike for new trucks in 2013 when the Euro-6 emissions legislation comes into effect... The new emissions law will come into force on new vehicle types from January 2013 and on all new vehicle registrations 12 months later. Harmful exhaust gases such as nitrous oxides and particulate matter will be substantially reduced compared to Euro-5, although nothing has been done to tackle CO2 output... The effort required to meet this new legislation will lead to European truck manufacturers investing €8bn in new technology and engines to meet the regs, says Mercedes - its bill alone will be more than €1bn... As well as the new vehicle price hike - estimated by Mercedes at 10% - operators will face a fuel efficiency penalty as a result of Euro-6, which in some cases could be as much as 6%. Merc is tight-lipped about the impact its planned new range of engines will have on operating efficiency, although a 1%-2% increase is expected... (Photo from s40.radikal.ru)
