* Iowa - Morrell closure already hurting trucking industry

Sioux Center,IO,USA -KTIV Local News -Apr 15, 2010: -- The Sioux City John Morrell plant has been closed for barely a week now, but some businesses say they're already seeing a significant financial impact... Ryan Moret has been in the trucking business for 20 years. And every weekday for the last 20 years, he's hauled hogs to Sioux City's John Morrell plant. The closure is already weighing heavy on him and his business... Instead of the trek between Sioux City and Sioux Center, Moret says his truckers will now have longer runs and they'll lose those valuable back hauls... Moret says right now, he's hoping to replace those lost runs to Sioux City by hauling hogs to Denison, Sioux Falls or Crete. But even then, the loss will hit him financially... And its not just Moret's business; he says there are many truckers in small communities around the region trying to rebound from the loss of the plant... Moret says with most of the truckers in the area now making longer hauls, there could be some shortages of trucks for local jobs. He also says he's lost many friends and business colleagues who were also associated with the plant...

* New York - State Scraps Truck Rural-Route Restrictions

New York,NY,USA -The Associated Press/Transport Topics -14 April 2010: -- The New York State Department of Transportation told a transportation task force that it will no longer pursue efforts to restrict trucks from using certain rural routes in the Finger Lakes area, American Trucking Associations said... The announcement came after the department determined that the restrictions are unlikely to impact the seven routes under consideration because 94% of the truck traffic is local and most trucks would simply shift to other local routes instead of the Interstate system... Farmers said the proposal would cost them money by forcing them to re-route deliveries and the New York Farm Bureau said it was pleased that the state DOT reconsidered, reported... * Kansas - RUMOURS: Questions, Anger at YRCW over President’s Departure

Overland Park,KS,USA -Teamsters for D.U. -April 14, 2010: -- The sudden departure of YRCW’s President and Chief Operating Officer, Timothy Wicks, has led to a flurry of speculation in the media, wild rumors fueled by competitors, and some anger among YRC Teamsters... Speculation about why he left runs the course, including disagreements with CEO, Bill Zollars. Whatever the inside story, a number of Teamsters are upset that he was paid “retention bonuses” of $400,000 in January and $200,000 on April 1 supposedly to stay the course with YRCW. It’s small potatoes for the corporation, but it’s an irritation to plenty of Teamsters and lower-level management people who have been hit with painful concessions and suspension of pension credits... Hopefully the incident will not harm Teamsters’ efforts to help get YRC on the right track...

* Colorado -
Priola Trucking Business Incentives

Denver,CO,USA -Gateway News Report -April 14, 2010: -- Rep. Kevin Priola, R-Henderson, today presented to committee his proposal that would grant incentives for investment in the trucking industry in Colorado ... According to Priola, truck registration in Colorado has dropped more than 57% since 2000 and trucking employment declined by 30,000 jobs, costing the state considerable tax revenues... Priola’s proposal would allow the trucking industry to qualify for enterprise-zones and sales-tax credits. It would grant companies a sales tax refund as well as an income credit for their commercial vehicle investment in Colorado. It would also increase the fines for egregiously overweight trucks and the money collected from overweight vehicles fines would go into a fund that would pay for these incentives and offset their cost, while also protecting our roads and environment...
