* India - Ashok Leyland’s Pantnagar unit to recoup costs in 4 yrs.
Mumbai,India -Live Mint, by Shally Seth -9 Feb 2010: -- India’s second largest commercial vehicle maker by sales volume, Ashok Leyland Ltd, is looking to recoup capital investment of Rs1,100 crore in its Pantnagar plant over four years through savings on excise duty, chief financial officer, K. Sridharan, said in an interview... As part of an incentive programme to promote industry in the northern state of Uttarakhand, auto makers that set up manufacturing units there were exempt from 8% Central excise duty for 10 years. They were also offered an income tax holiday for the first five years and a 30% discount for the next five... The Pantnagar plant has an annual capacity to turn out 50,000 units, said Sridharan... Some analysts who track the auto sector say Ashok Leyland, which gets two-thirds of its revenue from heavy vehicles, is better poised to gain from a recovery in the auto sector than rivals...
* UK - Mercedes-Benz to Build Electric Van Prototype and Help Develop EV Taxi in U.K.
London,UK -Green Advisor, by Danny King -9 Feb 2010: -- Mercedes-Benz has built a prototype of an all-electric version of its Vito van and will help build an electric-vehicle prototype - also based on the Vito - of a London taxicab, marking the world's largest truckmaker's attempt to broaden van sales by selling battery EVs to commercial and municipal customers... The company plans to deliver more than 100 electric vans to fleet operators this year and another 2,000 vehicles in its next development phase... Additionally, Mercedes will work with U.K.-based vehicle distributor Eco City Vehicles, manufacturer Penso, electric engine maker Zytec Automotive and rear-wheel steering system developer One80 Ltd. at building a Vito-based prototype for a London taxi... * India - Tata Motors Develops Fuel Cell-Powered Commercial Vehicles
Mumbai,India -India Server -11 Feb 2009: -- After displaying the electric Indica and hybrid Nano, now India’s leading auto maker, Tata Motors has developed a range of hydrogen fuel cell-powered commercial vehicles like buses and light trucks. The fuel-cell powered commercial vehicles are now under trials in the company’s European Technical Centre...
