TRUCKING INDUSTRY * UK - Transport Secretary backs FTA carbon reporting scheme

London,UK -Road Transport, by Laura Hailstone -16 February 2010: -- Lord Adonis, the Secretary of State for Transport, has backed the Freight Transport Association's (FTA) Logistics Carbon-Reduction Scheme (LCRS), which aims to find a universal method for operators to report, measure and reduce carbon emissions... In a letter to the FTA confirming the Department for Transport's (DfTs) support for the scheme, Adonis acknowledged the need to reduce carbon emissions from logistics as an important part of the DfT's Carbon-Reduction Strategy... Under the scheme, LCRS members will submit their fuel data to the FTA for analysis to provide an accurate picture of the logistics sector's carbon footprint. This will allow government to base its carbon-reduction policy on hard evidence... The LCRS already has the backing of some of the FTA's leading members, but it is open to all operators of commercial vehicles... (Images fleetdata.co.uk: trucks)

London,UK -Road Transport, by Christopher Walton -17 February 2010: -- The Freight Transport Association (FTA) has lambasted the government for causing a spike in inflation through successive increases in fuel tax... The UK inflation rate rose to 3.5% in January - the fastest annual pace for 14 months - up from 2.9% in December 2009, according to the Consumer Prices Index (CPI)... In a letter to the Chancellor, Alistair Darling, Bank of England governor Mervyn King blamed the rise on petrol-price inflation caused by the restoration of VAT to 17.5% as well as a 70% rise in oil prices... Jo Tanner, communications director at the FTA, said inflation had risen largely off the back of rising fuel costs to transport goods...
