TRUCK'S BLACK BOX * Australia - Fox's ones won't be fast-tracked
Canberra,Australia -ATN, by Brad Gardner -February 15, 2010: -- Trucking industry icon Lindsay Fox is pushing the installation of black box recorders, but the Rudd Government has dismissed claims they will be fast-tracked... During a meeting of Asia-Pacific transport ministers last week, Fox outlined the benefits of recording driver movements and proposed their use in all commercial vehicles... The Australian Trucking Association (ATA) attended the meeting and claims transport ministers from Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and New Zealand are now working together to accelerate the use of GPS technology... But a spokesman for Infrastructure and Transport Minister, Anthony Albanese, dismissed the claims and says the Government is already operating to a timeline on the technology and will stick to it... * New Zealand - Black boxes in trucks some way off in NZ
Auckland,NZ -TV NZPA -February 18, 2010: -- Black box technology as used in aircraft is now making roads safer, though New Zealand truckers won't be seeing the device in the short term... It would "unfortunately" be exceptionally expensive to retrofit the technology in the existing truck fleet, as proposed in Australia, Road Transport forum chief executive Tony Friedlander told NZPA... Overseas "black-box" technology was being incorporated in cars to record things such as speed and braking in the run-up to a crash. The devices continuously record information, such as speedometer readings, and if a crash occurs, the few seconds preceding impact are stored for retrieval...
