TRUCKING INDUSTRY * USA & Canada - Kraft Foods Cuts 50 Million Truck Miles

Shipper's sustainability effort cuts emissions across global distribution network

Northfield,ILL,USA -The Journal of Commerce, by William B. Cassidy -Dec 11, 2009: -- Kraft Foods took 50 million truck miles out of its global distribution operations through a broad effort to overhaul shipping strategies and make its supply chain more efficient, the food giant said... The $42 billion manufacturer of products from Kraft cheese to Maxwell House coffee to Oscar Mayer meats chopped the highway miles over the past four years using alternatives to trucking, and rethinking its distribution network on a broad scale... Some of its inbound and outbound freight shifted from highways to rail and to waterways, the company said. It also streamlined distribution, repositioning hubs and other facilities to reduce the number of trucks it needs and the number of miles they travel... * Canada - Fleets extending life-cycles to avoid 2010 engine

Winnipeg,MB,Canada -Truck News -14 Dec 2009: ... by Bison Transport director of fleet assets Itamar Levine... It's safe to say Levine is unenthusiastic about the impending requirements. Bison has one 2010 engine in operations – a BlueTec SCR-equipped Detroit Diesel – which it's running in its LCV fleet. It's too early to evaluate its fuel mileage, Levine told me, since the company doesn't have a similarly-spec'd truck in its fleet for comparisons. While the truck and engine appear to be performing well and diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) is readily available even now, Levine had other concerns... For one, the cost: In 2007 Class 8 trucks went up in price about $10,000 and that's about to happen again next year. And then there's the weight. Obviously, LCV operations are weight-sensitive and the 400 or so pounds the SCR system adds to the vehicle is costly. Factor in the weight of other fuel-saving equipment such as APUs, and Bison's tractors are rolling off the assembly line overweight on the steer axles before adding fuel and a driver, Levine pointed out. In the interest of saving the planet, government should be getting involved and increasing GVWs on trucks that fit SmartWay or enviroTruck criteria. Otherwise, fleets will delay purchasing environmentally-friendly trucks as long as possible...

* USA - Banks Extend YRC Worldwide's Credit Line

Overland Park,KS,USA -The Journal of Commerce Online, by William B. Cassidy -Dec 16, 2009: -- Credit extension gives troubled carrier until Jan. 12 to sort debt-equity swap... YRC Worldwide's banking group came to the troubled carrier's rescue today, extending its credit agreement until Jan. 12 and effectively giving YRC another month to complete a debt-for-equity swap with bondholders key to its plans to avoid bankruptcy... In their thirteenth amendment to the credit agreement since 2007, the banking group agreed to continue to let YRC draw up to $50 million at any time from its $950 million revolver reserve block, and it suspends a minimum cash requirement through Jan. 11... That pushes off concern over a near-term bankruptcy filing by the carrier, which has lost more than $2 billion over the past two and a half years.... YRC is wrestling with reluctant bondholders as it struggles to complete a debt-for-equity swap that would wipe $536.8 million in debt from its books...
