Volume decline slows in October, reducing container imbalance

Brussels,Belgium -The Journal of Commerce Online, by Bruce Barnard -Dec 14, 2009: -- The year long decline in Asia-Europe container traffic is slowing and freight rates are rising, according to the latest figures from ocean carriers... Shipments from Asia to Europe fell 10 percent in October to 962,818 twenty foot equivalent units from 1.075 million TEUs a year ago, the European Liner Affairs Association said... This compares with a 22 percent year-on-year declines in both the first and second quarters, the Brussels-based carrier organization noted... "The export trades from Europe to Asia are now enjoying a mini boom," the ELAA said... Shipments rose 12.57 percent in October to 464,689 TEUs from 413,249 TEUs a year ago...


* USA - Port of LA Cuts Terminal Rents. Relief program to keep tenants competitive, protect market share

Los Angeles,CAL,USA -The Journal of Commerce Online, by Bill Mongelluzzo -Dec 14, 2009:
-- Marine terminal and shipping industry executives applauded the latest relief program that will save Port of Los Angeles tenants about $25.7 million in the coming year... The harbor commission approved a temporary 6 percent rent reduction for container terminal operators, an empty container discount and reduced rates for containerized cargo transferred from one vessel to another within the port... This package of savings, most of which will be realized during the first six months of 2010, is in addition to a $15 million relief program involving intermodal container discounts that Los Angeles put into effect this past year...
