TRUCKING JOBS * USA - Overall jobless rate falls, but truck transportation takes a hit
The truck transportation industry accounted for 21 percent of the jobs lost

Overall, the economy shed 11,000 jobs last month, an improvement from October's revised total of 111,000, the Labor Department said Friday. The unemployment rate unexpectedly fell to 10 percent in November as employers cut the smallest number of jobs since the recession began. The better-than-expected job figures are a rare note of encouraging news for the labor market... According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the truck transportation industry lost 2,400 jobs in November... Even worse, general freight trucking long distance, a category that includes both the truckload and less-than-truckload sectors, lost 7,300 jobs as total employment in those categories fell from 679,700 jobs to 672,400... LTL took the biggest hit, losing 5,500 jobs... Experts figure the overall respite may be temporary. Many economists expect the unemployment rate to climb into next year as the economy struggles to generate enough jobs for the 15.4 million people out of work... Washington,DC,USA -eTrucker, by Avery Vise -7 Dec 2009: -- Payroll employment among for-hire trucking companies in November dropped 0.2 percent on a seasonally adjusted basis from October levels... Employment is down 8.7 percent from November 2008, according to preliminary figures released Friday, Dec. 4, by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. The latest BLS report includes adjustments to previous figures showing slightly fewer job losses in recent months than previously reported... With the estimated 2,400 jobs lost in November, the trucking industry has lost a little more than 89,000 jobs since the end of 2008 – a decline of 6.7 percent. Job cuts since July 2008 – just before the current decline – total 139,700...
