Union City,CAL,USA -KCBS -15 Dec 2009: -- The city streets and freeways of the future will be able to tell commuters ahead of time whether they’re about to hit a back-up, and adjust speed limits for optimum traffic flow... That future is already here in Alameda County where traffic lights know to stay green when buses and emergency vehicles are coming... Soon a 20-mile corridor on Interstate 80 between Crockett and Emeryville will experiment with a variable speed limit determined by the road sensors that already calculate driving times... The guiding idea behind the vision Fay and others brainstormed for Bay Area freeways of the 21st century was to give people information about what’s ahead of them no matter how they choose to travel.
