* Sweden - Scania sees bumpy 2010 recovery in truck market
Stockholm,Sweden -Reuters, by Niklas Pollard/Johannes Hellstrom/Victoria Klesty & David Cowell -26 Oct 2009: -- Truck maker Scania AB on Monday cautioned that strengthening order books and a leveling off in the downturn in its key western European would not bring a quick rebound next year... Operating earnings tumbled to 519 million Swedish crowns ($76 million) from a year-ago 2.82 billion, topping the average 246 million seen in a Reuters poll of 16 analysts... Massive stimulus measures from governments and central banks has helped spawn some measure of activity in the highly cyclical heavy-duty market though demand remains dismal... Scania, which like its peers has scrambled to cut costs to cope with the downturn, said orders for trucks fell 6 percent year-on-year in the third quarter compared with a 55 percent drop in the previous quarter...
* Germany - Daimler Reports Its First Quarterly Profit in a Year
Stuttgart,Germany -Transport Topics -27 Oct 2009: -- Daimler AG Tuesday reported its first quarterly profit in a year, saying it earned about $61 million, or 4 cents a share, in the third quarter, down from about $200 million, or 21 cents, a year ago... The profit was largely boosted by the company’s auto division, Bloomberg reproted. Germany-based Daimler reports its earnings in euros... Daimler’s worldwide truck division is “still operating in a difficult marketing environment,” the company said in a statement... Unit sales in North America — including Freightliner and Sterling Trucks, as well as Thomas Built buses — totaled 15,200 vehicles, down 41% from a year ago... Asian sales also declined more than 40%, though the company said it sees long-term growth in Russia...
* USA - Cat selectively recalling workers
Peoria,ILL;USA -Fleet Owner -Oct 26, 2009: -- Some laid-off employees of Caterpillar have received good news that thanks to improvement in the global economy, the construction equipment manufacturer has begun bringing back approximately 550 U.S. employees... But the company also said it will officially notify 2,500 other employees who were previously laid off that they will not be returning to work... Last week, Cat outlined its forecast for 2010, predicting sales of 10 to 25% higher than 2009, which it is saying will be $32 to $33 billion...
* USA - Paccar’s Third-Quarter Net Income Plunges 96%
Bellevue,Wash,USA -Transport Topics -27 Oct 2009: -- Paccar Inc.’s third-quarter profit plunged 96% to $13 million, or 4 cents a share, from $299 million, or 82 cents, a year ago... Sales fell 50% to $2 billion, the company said Tuesday. Paccar is the parent company of U.S. truck makers Kenworth Truck Co. and Peterbilt Motors Co., and Europe-based DAF Trucks... Truck sales and revenue fell to $1.8 billion from $3.7 billion a year ago, while the truck division took an operating loss of $6.2 million compared with a profit of $361 million a year ago... Financial services revenue fell to $241.7 million from $321.8 million last year, the company said. The unit’s net income fell to $13 million, from $299 million...
* Germany - Volkswagen to decide on Karmann deal within 2 weeks
Garbsen,Germany -Reuters -Oct 27, 2009: -- Volkswagen's powerful supervisory board chairman Ferdinand Piech, the architect behind the firm's acquisition strategy, once again hinted that other acquisitions could follow the purchase of Porsche... Aside from Porsche, truck maker MAN and Suzuki are "real brands" of interest to Volkswagen, Piech said at the same event... At the Frankfurt auto show in September, Piech signaled he would like to see 12 brands within Volkswagen Group... The Wolfsburg, Germany-based auto maker is seeking to raise up to 10 billion euros for acquisitions...
* Germany - MAN to build Volkswagen branded trucks, buses in South Africa
Munich,Germany -Associated Press/Washington Examiner (USA) -26 Oct 2009: -- German truck and bus maker MAN SE will build Volkswagen branded trucks and buses in South Africa, starting in November, to tap into the wider sub-Saharan market... MAN, based in Munich, already has some operations in South Africa, but will now also build and market VW brands. The move comes after it recently bought the Latin American truck and bus operations of Volkswagen... Volkswagen, based in Wolfsburg, holds about 30 percent of MAN, one of Europe's largest builders of heavy vehicles... MAN said late Sunday it would build the Volkswagen branded Constellation truck series and the Volksbus series at its Pinetown plant near Durban, on the southeast coast... With demand expected to rise and inventories falling, MAN said the Pinetown assembly plant has the potential to double its production to about 3,200 units a year thanks to the introduction of the Constellation trucks and Volksbus chassis...
* Germany - MAN SE Profit Almost Wiped Out on Truck-Sale Drop
Munich,Germany -Bloomberg, by Andreas Cremer -Oct. 29, 2009: -- MAN SE, Europe’s third-largest truckmaker, said third-quarter profit was almost wiped out as tighter credit discouraged freight transporters and construction companies from making purchases... Net income plunged to 4 million euros ($5.9 million), or 2 cents a share, from 298 million euros, or 2.03 euros, the Munich-based company said today in a statement. Sales dropped 14 percent to 3.1 billion euros while orders at the main trucks division slumped 37 percent to 1.2 billion euros...
* UK - Stralis for long-distance operator
Kent,UK -HGV UK -October 29, 2009: -- Kent-based CS Bull Ltd is taking delivery of three new Iveco Stralis Active Space Super³ tractor units, each finished in a jet black livery and built for long-distance operations across mainland Europe... Iveco Stralis AS440S45T/P 4×2 tractor units are each plated at 40 tonnes and are left-hand drive coupled with long-range 1,160 litre diesel tanks and 100 litre AdBlue tanks. The specification also sees the regular Eberspacher night heater replaced with a water-based heater as original equipment, providing the same excellent interior heating whilst also warming the engine to ensure prompt starting even in the harsh winter climate commonly experienced in Scandinavia and Eastern Europe...
* Russia - Truckmaker KamAZ posts $60 mln half-year net loss
Moscow,Russia -The FINANCIAL (Tbilisi,Georgia) -29 Oct 2009: -- According to RIA Novosti, Russia's largest truck producer, KamAZ, announced on October 29 net losses under International Financial Reporting Standards of 1.8 billion rubles ($60 million) in January-June 2009... KamAZ, based in the Volga Republic of Tatarstan, posted a net profit of 2.63 billion rubles ($82 million) in the same period last year... Revenues in the reporting period declined 49.4% to 25.42 billion rubles ($847 million), KamAZ said in a statement... KamAZ has suspended production several times since the beginning of 2009 amid declining sales caused by the ongoing economic crisis, putting workers on forced holidays...
* Czech - Truckmaker Tatra cutting 530 jobs
Praga,Czech -Inautonews -30 Oct 2009: -- Truckmaker Tatra will let go of 530 staff this month and shorten its working week from November due to falling orders, a spokesman said on Tuesday... The company had let go of 1,000 employees up to June because of the economic crisis and posted a loss-making 2008. It said it expects its employee count to be around 2,200 after this latest round of job losses... Unemployment in the Czech Republic has jumped to a more than three-year high of 8.5 percent, and many analysts see it growing to near 10 percent next year as manufacturers shed jobs...
