TRUCKING INDUSTRY WORLDWIDE * Vietnam - Truckers complain of weight limit

Moving and shipping companies are losing dozens of contracts because of a Government regulation that bans container trucks weighing more than 30 tonnes

Hanoi,Vietnam -Look At Vietnam –7 Sept 2009: ... “Dozens of complaints and petitions have been filed at a time when production is gearing up for the remainder of the year,” said Nguyen Manh Hung, chairman of the Viet Nam Automobile and Transportation Association (VATA). In a meeting with companies last week, Deputy Minister of Transport, Le Manh Hung said the ministry had asked VATA to take down signs on roadways, particularly in the central and southern regions, that have inaccurate truck-load limitations... The deputy minister said that the load capacity of trucks could not be limited on newly built bridges, but weaker and older ones should be reported to the ministry for inspection... Chairman Hung said that up to 80 per cent of containers of imports range from 20 to 30 tonnes in load, pushing up the total weight of trucks to 36-45 tonnes... Truck companies that violate the road ban are asked to shed the extra containers. They are fined VND3-5 million (US$170-300), and their driving licences revoked for 60 days...
