* Freight industry rolls in August, American Trucking Associations says

Kansas,MO,USA -The Kansas City Business Journal -25 Sept 2009: -- The freight industry hauled in another gain in August, making two consecutive months of growth and prompting a prediction that the worst has passed... The American Trucking Associations said Friday that its advance, seasonally adjusted, for-hire truck tonnage index rose 2.1 percent in August, after rising the same amount in July. Compared with the year-ago period, August tonnage dropped 7.5 percent — the best year-to-year comparison since November, the ATA said in a release...


* YRC Worldwide trucking co. making more job cuts

Overland Park,Kan,USA -Reuters, by Carey Gillam -Sep 25, 2009: -- Troubled trucking concern YRC Worldwide Inc. was slashing more jobs this week, just before the end of the its third quarter, as it continues to work with lenders and labor to stave off collapse... Sources inside the No. 1 U.S. less-than-truckload (LTL) company said the cuts were substantial and layoffs were being made across many departments... * Albany trucking terminal to close, 81 workers may be cut

Albany,NY,USA -Fox23news, by Walt Mc Clure -25 Sept 2009: -- Bad news tonight for workers at Albany trucking plant... That plant could be shutting down and putting several dozen people out of work... It's the Penske Logistics plant on Terminal Street in Albany, adjacent to the Freihofer's bakery plant, and closing day is set to come right before Christmas... Since 1997, trucking company Penske Logistics has had a contract with Bimbo Bakeries, then George Weston Bakeries, to provide delivery and transport services for their products... * DOT wants more women in trucking


Atlanta,USA -eTrucker -25 Sept 2009: -- U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood appeared yesterday, Sept. 21, at Spelman College in Atlanta to announce the Pilot Entrepreneurial Training and Technical Assistance Women and Girls Program, created to encourage girls to pursue careers in science, engineering and technology and help women in the field to achieve their goals... The new program, managed by a partnership between the U.S. Department of Transportation and Spelman College, is part of a broader effort, led by the White House, to ensure that federal programs and policies take into account the needs and concerns of women and girls... The partnership will create an internship and mentoring program to bring more female students into transportation-related careers and help them gain hands-on experience. It also will help small women-owned transportation companies to complete for DOT contracts, and make sure they get the technical and finance assistance they need to succeed... * USA - Velocity Express Sold in Bankruptcy Deal

Westport,CT,USA -The Journal of Commerce, by William B. Cassidy-Sep 24, 2009: -- Same-day package company Velocity Express filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection from its creditors today, announcing plans to restructure under a new owner, ComVest, in a debt-for-equity swap... The transaction will wipe out more than $100 million in debt, said Vincent A. Wasik, Velocity’s chairman and CEO... Wasik and the company’s current management team will remain in place after the sale, and will own a minority stake in the restructured company, as will former bondholders...
