* Belgium - Europe Heavy-Truck Deliveries Fall 57% as Decline Accelerates
Brussels,Belgium -Bloomberg, By Chris Reiter -Sept. 24, 2009: -- European heavy-truck sales fell 57 percent last month, as the global recession ravaged the region’s main markets, eroding demand from freight transporters and construction companies... Manufacturers sold 8,947 trucks weighing at least 16 metric tons in August, compared with 20,849 a year earlier, the Brussels-based European Automobile Manufacturers Association said in a statement today. It was the sharpest decline in heavy- truck sales, since the market slump began in May 2008... Daimler AG, Volvo AB and MAN SE, Europe’s top three truckmakers, have responded to the global sales decline by scaling back production. Stuttgart, Germany-based Daimler, the world’s biggest, has announced plans to cut 5,800 jobs and close four factories in Asia and North America. MAN suspended truck production for 70 days in the first six months of 2009 and has shortened workweeks for the rest of the year... Total commercial vehicle deliveries, including buses and vans, fell 35 percent in August to 96,697 vehicles in Europe, marking the 16th consecutive monthly decline, the association said... * Germany - MAN Commercial Vehicles to beat cost cut target
Munich,Germany -Reuters -Sep 24, 2009: -- MAN's commercial vehicles business will exceed its 500 million euro ($736.4 million) cost savings target for this year "by a good 100 million", division chief Anton Weinmann said on Thursday... He told a news conference that the question of whether MAN Commercial Vehicles would make an operating profit this year was extremely difficult...
* Brazil - Electric Daily Prototype Begins Testing in
Foz Do Iguazu,Brazil -TNN (UK), by Gerald Woodgate -originally publ. 4 Sept 2009: -- Iveco has presented a prototype of its new Electric Daily in Brazil, destined to be the first zero emission light commercial vehicle produced in Latin America... This new project sees Iveco collaborating with Itaipu Binacional, an organisation which manages the largest hydroelectric generating station in the world on the border between Brazil and Paraguay. The production of the prototype will enable suitability testing to be carried out, looking specifically at the utilisation of electrical energy for the transportation of goods and passengers... The prototype, based on a crew cab Daily 55C, is equipped with three sealed Zebra Z5 sodium, nickel and chloride batteries. These batteries do not produce gaseous emissions and are maintenance free and totally recyclable. The vehicle is also equipped with an energy recovery system, similar to the KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) used in Formula 1 racing, which enables the vehicle to recharge its batteries under braking conditions. This system gives the vehicle a range of 100km and a fully laden top speed of 70 km/h... Once the tests have been completed the Electric Daily is expected to enter production with Iveco ...
* Sweden - Volvo issues Airbag advice
Stockholm,Sweden -HGV (UK) -September 24, 2009: -- In 1995 Volvo Trucks were the first commercial vehicle manufacturer to install Air-bags as standard on their FH range. Now Volvo Trucks is advising customers to have the system integrity of their vehicles’ SRS Air-Bag modules checked by a qualified workshop, such as their local Volvo Dealer, after the vehicle has been in service for 10 years... The reason for the recommendation is that Volvo cannot ensure the integrity of the system beyond a service life of ten years. According to Volvo’s Technical Service, plastic parts within the SRS Air-Bag undergo ageing and the material’s characteristics may change... * UK - Big DAF helps keep the traffic flowing
Ashfield,Derbyshire,UK -HGV UK -September 24, 2009: -- Installing motorway crash barriers, both permanent and temporary, is being made easier by the arrival of a specially equipped DAF CF85 tractor at Derbyshire contractors HW Martin Safety Fencing Limited... The vehicle is unusual in being an extra long wheelbase version of the DAF FTT 6×4 tractor. At 4.55 metres wheelbase, it’s a length normally used for the New Zealand market, the UK standard for this model being 3.9 metres... The additional length is needed to accommodate a 26 tonne/metre PM crane sitting directly behind the cab and a safety walkway for the operatives to work from when attaching the lifting chains...
