Truckers' Strike * South Korea - Braced For

South Korea's government warned truckers not to go ahead with a nationwide strike planned for Thursday, saying they could lose their driving licenses or fuel subsidies

Seoul,SK -AFP/The Wall Street Journal (USA) -June 10, 2009: -- The Korean Cargo Workers' Union, which claims to have about 15,000 members, said it would launch the strike early Thursday after talks with their main employer, Korea Express Co., broke down... The truckers are demanding better working conditions, wage rises and the reinstatement of dismissed union activists... The government provides truckers with a subsidy of KRW337 ($0.27) per liter of fuel, some 20% of its cost... Union members operate 4,000 container trucks and 11,000 other trucks, the ministry said... It said the government would mobilize some 100 military container trucks and schedule more cargo rail services... A week-long strike by truckers in June last year hit the country's trade-dependent economy hard, causing an estimated $7.2 billion of missed imports and exports...
