Washington,DC,USA -Transport Topics, by Sean McNally -15 June 2009: -- The trucking industry lost 8,100 jobs in May, the lowest total in eight months and roughly half the number that were laid off in April, the Labor Department reported... The decline of 8,100 jobs was the smallest since the trucking industry lost 7,800 jobs in October of last year... Trucking employment was “a lot better than March and April, but for the first five months of this year industry shed 67,100 jobs — significantly more than the 15,300 reduction that we saw in the corresponding period in 2008,” said Bob Costello, chief economist with American Trucking Associations... * UK - Van maker LDV sacks more than 800 workers
Washwood Heath,Birmingham,UK -World Socialist Web Site, by Robert Stevens -16 June 2009: -- Last week, administrators PriceWaterhouseCoopers announced that nearly all 850 workers employed by the van maker LDV are to be made redundant. The decision came after the breakdown in talks between the Russian owners of the firm, Gaz, and the Malaysian firm, Weststar, which had expressed interest in buying the company. A skeleton staff of 40 will remain at the plant in Washwood Heath to maintain the site... Jobs are expected to go among the 1,200 staff employed at the firm’s dealerships and another 4,000 workers involved in LDV’s supply chain...
