BORDER TROUBLES * UAE/Saudi Arabia - Crisis may hit business hard

Al-Ghuwaifat,Dubai -The Gulf News, by Rachna Uppal -June 14, 2009: -- Transport operators and traders are feeling the heat of the stalemate on the border between the UAE and Saudi Arabia... The cost to business is likely to be substantial, with one cross-border transportation specialist suggesting business could be down by as much as 50 per cent as a result of the impasse... -PUBLISHER NOTE: And the cost for the truckers involved in ??? No bureaucrats think about !!!- Truckers' patience has run out, they want to quit and go home. This was the mood among the drivers at Al Ghuwaifat on Sunday, even as the queue of trucks was reduced from 37 km to 22 km... Though Saudi authorities eased the stringent checks to some extent to allow trucks in, there are still more than 7,500 trucks stuck at the border... * Saudi Arabia - Moves to clear backlog of trucks

Al Sila,Saudi Arabia -Zawya/The Gulf News, by Abdulla Rasheed -Jun 14, 2009: -- Saudi authorities opened their borders fully for several hours overnight on Saturday, partially clearing a backlog of stranded truckers that snaked back nearly 40km into the UAE... By last night, the line of trucks stretched 19km, still a significant wait for thousands of drivers seeking access to Saudi Arabia and other GCC countries... The Saudi government has imposed strict new rules for truckers entering the kingdom, requiring them to unload and reload their cargoes for inspection, verifying drivers' identities and fingerprinting them... Since the beginning of June, the line had stretched back kilometres past Al Sila into the desert. The truckers faced days in the heat...
The Red Crescent Authority (RCA) is stepping up humanitarian efforts to ease the suffering of stranded truckers, WAM reported.Saleh Mohammad Al Mualla, RCA Secretary General, said a second team of volunteers is being assembled to help the truckers. Snacks, drinking water and food are already being distributed...
