No increases ahead for Class 8 manufacturers
Santa Fe Springs,CAL,USA -The Journal of Commerce Online, by John Gallagher -May 6, 2009: -- Heavy truck orders for major North American manufacturers in April were down 9 percent from March and 57 percent from April 2008 with no improvement in sight, according to data compiled by FTR Associates... Preliminary data showed net orders for Class 8 trucks totaled 7,935 units in April, which includes orders for the U.S., Canada, Mexico and exports. April orders reflect an annualized rate of 95,220 units and “continue to represent a significantly depressed Class 8 retail sales environment,” FTR said...
* Volvo Calls for Longer, Heavier Trucks
Boston,MASS,USA -Transport Topics -8 April 2009: -- Volvo Trucks North America said the United States should adopt a policy of allowing longer, heavier trucks on the nation’s highways as a way to increase driver productivity and to conserve fuel... Scott Kress, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Volvo Trucks North America said that to address the problems of fuel efficiency, freight productivity and congestion, “one strategy that should be well understood and considered is more productive trucks.”... Kress said motor carriers should have the “ability to use longer combination vehicles throughout the Interstate Highway System.”...
