Transportation Stimulus * USA - Spending Nears $13B

DOT ahead of schedule pushing money out the door

Washington,DC,USA -The Journal of Commerce Online, by John D. Boyd -May 21, 2009: -- “As of this week, we’ve made nearly $13 billion available” in Recovery Act funds for infrastructure projects around the country, Transportation Secretary, Ray LaHood said... Amid concerns about how fast the government is spending the stimulus money and whether it is enough to spur the economy, LaHood told a National Press Club audience... He said the highway portion of the stimulus law “is flowing at the rate of nearly four billion dollars a month – nearly twice as fast as traditional highway dollars.”... Even before the actual construction gets under way, he said just approving the projects adds a boost. “Every new project we announce is an immediate signal for states to advertise contracts, and for contractors to begin hiring workers and ordering materials like steel and asphalt.”...
