* USA - More Fleet Failures Expected as Carriers’ Rates, Volumes Fall

Arlington,VA,USA -Transport Topics, by Rip Watson -March 9, 2009: -- Falling freight rates and volumes likely will produce a new wave of bankruptcies in the first quarter that could set the stage for rapid industry consolidation, several industry experts have said... Truck tonnage fell 10.8% in January, according to American Trucking Associations, and several sources estimated that rates have fallen 5% to 15% from this time last year... The tonnage and rate drops offset gains fleets reaped last quarter from the steep drop in fuel prices, which kept many marginally successful fleets in business. The number of trucking bankruptcies fell to 375 in the fourth quarter of 2008 after 2,690 fleets failed in the first three quarters when diesel soared, according to Avondale Partners...

Filipe Mendes de Almeida, who represents the group's Iveco truck business in the southwestern African nation, said on Thursday he would import 2,000 trucks to Angola in the next five years... Volvo, the world's number two truckmaker, is currently the leader in the market... Angola, one of the world's fastest growing economies, has been rebuilding roads, bridges and ailing communications destroyed by the war. It is also investing billions of dollars to restore its once-prosperous agricultural sector...


* China - February Auto Sales Rise 25% After Tax Cuts

Beijing,China -Bloomberg, by Tian Ying -March 10, 2009: -- China vehicle sales surged 25 percent in February, the first gain in four months, after the government cut taxes on some models, helping the country extend its lead as the world’s largest auto market this year... Sales of passenger cars, buses and trucks climbed to 827,600, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers said today in Beijing. The tally in the first two months rose 2.7 percent to 1.56 million, compared with a 39 percent decline to 1.35 million in the U.S....
