"TIGER" * USA - LaHood creates USDOT economic team

Wahington,DC,USA -eTrucker -4 Feb 2009: -- U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood today, Feb. 4, announced he has created a team at the U.S. Department of Transportation to coordinate USDOT's role in President Obama’s economic recovery progra... The team's goal is to ensure that economic recovery funding is made available rapidly for transportation infrastructure projects and that project spending is monitored and transparent... The team, known as the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) team, is composed of officials from across USDOT's operating administrations and offices. The team is co-chaired by Lana Hurdle, deputy assistant secretary for budget and programs, and Joel Szabat, deputy assistant secretary for transportation policy...

Under her watch, the department will reach far beyond seaports and airports, Janet Napolitano told the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee during her confirmation hearing... “We haven’t done as much there as we have done on the aviation” side... While Napolitano specifically mentioned rail and border security, that could also mean new rules from truck lots to loading docks... The transportation community will be watching to see how she handles programs that are already under way or have approaching deadlines, like the 50-percent screening mandate for cargo carried in passenger planes that takes effect this month...
