TRUCKING INDUSTRY NEWS *- USA - Industry hit by dropping volume

Chippewa Falls,WIS,USA -The Leader-Telegram, by Chris Vetter -6 Jan 2008: -- As the economy slows, some truck drivers are finding it a challenge to get steady work because fewer products are being moved via freight, according to industry workers... Bob Loughan has been a truck-driving instructor at Chippewa Valley Technical College since 1992, and he is among several teachers in the program with more than 30 years of teaching or driving experience... Loughan said that, to a certain degree, it is becoming more challenging for truckers to find work... "Adequately trained drivers have a much easier time finding work than someone with just a (commercial driver's license)" Loughan said... "There's not the buffet of jobs to select from as before, but there are jobs. You just need to look a little more"... Loughan said he is starting to see the effects of the recession... (Photo by Andi Stempniak - Semitrailer trucks move many of the products to and from stores and factories. The downturn in the economy has adversely affected the need for people to drive the big rigs. Just three years ago the industry had a shortage of about 20,000 drivers)
