Railway bridge eventually will be unfit for vehicle traffic
Fort Madison,IOW,USA -The Hawk Eye, by NICHOLAS BERGIN -18 Jan 2009: -- Long and low, the Santa Fe truss bridge has spanned the Mississippi River connecting Fort Madison and Niota, Ill., for more than 75 years... Owned by the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Co., the 3,580-foot-long bridge sports two decks, the lower one for rail traffic and the upper for automobiles. It is the longest double-deck swing-span bridge in the world, according to local historian Loren "Andy" Andrews, who once worked as a bridge operator... When the bridge opened to traffic for the first time July 28, 1927, it was considered one of the greatest achievements of bridge engineering on record... Nov. 6, however, the bridge has been subject to an 8-ton weight limit, which affects about 10 percent of bridge traffic, BNSF spokesman Steven Forsberg said...
