TAX * USA - Empty trucks tax could net £8bn

The chief executive of Stobart, the haulier with a spotter's fan club, has proposed that the Government introduces a tax on empty trucks to cut road congestion and reduce fuel consumption

London,UK -The Telegraph, by Alistair Osborne -18 Jan 2009: -- Andrew Tinkler broached the idea with the Prime Minister's advisers several weeks ago and plans to take up the matter further in a meeting with the Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon on February 15... Mr Tinkler has calculated that a 15pc improvement in fleet utilisation would be worth £8bn a year to the UK haulage and logistics industries, with the knock-on benefits of fewer trucks on the roads and lower fuel burn... Unlike many of its rivals, Stobart operates a "pay-as-you-go" model, where customers do not retain a fleet of trucks in their own livery but buy in the capacity required... The model has allowed Stobart to increase fleet utilisation to 84pc against an industry average of about 70pc... Hauliers that provide a dedicated fleet for a single client can struggle to match such utilisation – particularly during a recession when the volume of work for some customers dries up... Stobart operates 1,800 trucks, and Mr Tinkler said each one percentage point rise in utilisation is worth £100 per truck per month...
