ALTERNATIVE FUEL * WORLDWIDE
* Australia - Ethanol now on tap in Dalby, Qld
Dalby,Qld,Australia -Stock and Land (Fairfax,Australia), by GRAHAM FULLER -6 Jan 2009: -- Australia's first grain-to-ethanol plant is up and running, generating huge interest as it seeks to meet most, if not all, its original strategic objectives... Dalby Bio-Refinery Ltd’s (DBRL) production processes holds the key to transforming truck-loads of sorghum into quality green fuel... Originally, ethanol was seen as playing an important part in combating climate change since it produces ’cleaner’ emissions when compared with fossil fuels... But early last year the United Nations appeared to have a change of heart when one official gained global mileage by suggesting ‘green energy’ was leading to thousands of acres of rain forest being cleared to grow crops for fuel, labelling it “a crime against humanity”... The Qld Government last year flagged its commitment to a 5pc ethanol mandate by 2010, and NSW also has indicated it wants an ethanol mandate... * USA - Ethanol industry woes deepen
Fairfax,Australia -Stock and Land, by ANN TONER -24 Dec 2008: -- After its meteoric rise as a major ag industry and world corn price lifter, US ethanol production is experiencing some tough times, according to Jim Jenkins, a cattleman, restaurateur and chairman of the Nebraska Ethanol Board... While some US ethanol plants are experiencing economic hardships, many plants are still profitable, Mr Jenkins told a Nebraska Farmers Union members convention... "Every industry, especially those that grow fast, faces some bumps," he says... Citing a Merrill Lynch analyst, Mr Jenkins says, "Without ethanol in the motor fuels market, gasoline prices would have been about 15pc higher, for most of 2008."...Now that energy prices are lower, Mr Buis worries that the fickle American public, and their elected leaders, will slack off on their call for greater energy independence... Biofuels, solar, wind and geothermal energy need continued support, or the next energy crisis could be more painful than past difficulties... (Photo 3: The plant’s two grain silos can accommodate 2,400 tonnes of grain, according to DBRL’s safety, health, environmental and community affairs manager, Nele Dinkla - Photo 4: A steady stream of trucks already is delivering wet distillers grains to nearby feedlots which value its high nutritional content)
* Canada - Manitoba eager to join the ranks of early bio-users
Winnipeg,Manitoba,CAN -Today's Trucking -7 Jan 2009: -- Both Alberta and B.C. have revealed plans to require renewable content in their diesel supply by 2010, but it appears Manitoba might try and beat them to it... According to a story in the Winnipeg Free Press, the province is set to require biodiesel content in the province’s diesel fuel at some point this year – ahead of a 2010 target... "Our target is 2010, but if we can do anything to do something faster, we're going to do it," Dan McInnis, Manitoba's assistant deputy minister of energy, climate change and green strategy initiatives, said in an interview with the local newspaper...
